My Maltesers Arctic Roll is my take on this weeks Great British Bake Off baking category for roulade, as it was Dessert Week tonight. A lot of roulades feature cream, but my family are not fans of cream but they do adore ice cream
When I was a girl a popular dessert for my brother and I was a slice of arctic roll. It is a very simple pudding really, a vanilla swiss roll containing jam and vanilla ice cream, and yet it was quite a threat to have a slice! Nowadays artic roll is still available in the freezer aisle of supermarkets (i think it is made by Walls?), but compared to all of the other fancy frozen desserts and delectable ice creams on offer, the humble artic roll is probably not a pudding of choice or popularity with todays youngsters!
So week 3 of the GBBO is here, and as soon as I discovered that it was bread week I really hoped that it would not be anything too elaborate, because as much as I love making bread, some of the bread challenges last series were quite laborious! When I saw that the categories were either quick bread (i.e. no yeast) , baguettes or 3d bread sculptures, I opted for the 1st one and I knew which bread I would ‘risk’ making.
I love Oreo cookies and I only actually discovered them about 2 years ago when I made my Oreo cupcakes and Oreo traybake, I love how they keep their shape while inside a cake. I have also used them inside a baked alaska and a brioche and butter pudding, I have made marshmallows with them and also petit fours. I just find them a very versatile cookie and one that can be easily used in a dessert. I also love how they taste full stop!
Ice cream is just delicious isn’t it? It is always a dessert that you can somehow squeeze in after a big meal, because it is so light and so yummy and you can serve it so many different ways and with so many different toppings. To celebrate all things ice cream, this Sunday 19th July, 2015, is National Ice Cream day – wooooo hoooo!
