It is not often that I buy myself a chocolate bar. I have been known to place grab bags of chocolates (like Maltesers) into my trolley when I am shopping if they are on a special deal, and I can never say no to the Popping Candy and Jelly Bean Marvellous Creations bars whenever they are on offer because they really are the bees knees in chocolate land. But, asides from that, I prefer to buy biscuits or make homemade cakes to fuel my sweet tooth.
However, one of my favourite chocolate bars that I used to buy when the fancy took me, were Toffee Crisps. I think it is because they are like chocolate krispy cakes which always take me back to my childhood, and especially birthday parties I went to. Or maybe it is just because they are yummy!!
Anyway, I was recently asked by Good To Know if I fancied having a go at recreating a guilty pleasure and I thought that making my own version of a toffee crisp would be easy (ish) enough. So here are my homemade Toffee Crisp Bars and how I made them.
- 125g rice krispies
- 175g unsalted butter
- 5 Mars Bars - roughly chopped
- 300g milk chocolate
- Line a 7 x 10 inch baking dish with grease proof paper
- Place the butter and the Mars Bars into a saucepan and melt gently over a low heat, stirring frequently.
- Once melted, beat well to eliminate any lumps
- Add the rice krispies and mix well to ensure they have been coated in the mars bar sauce
- Pour into the baking dish and ensureit is pressed into all thre corners and the top is smooth
- Leave somewhere cool for about an hour
- Meanwhile melt the chocolate - I did mine in the microwave at 30 second bursts
- Once the krispy mixture is cool, pour the chocolate over the top and smooth it all over
- Leave somewhere cool again until the chocolate is cool and then place in the fridge for an hour to set
- Then carefuly remove from the dish and using a sharp knife cut into equal sized rectangles - you should get 9 bars to make them toffee crisp bar sized.
- Keep in an airtight container in the fridge to keep them as crispy as possible and the chocolate firm and chilled.

These tasted as good as they looked! The Mars Bar adds the glue that holds the krispies in place, while also adding the toffee in the toffee crisp! I recall some time ago (maybe an old recipe book, or from a TV show I cannot recall exactly where now) discovering that if you use Mars Bars it eliminates the need to add golden syrup. I did add a thick layer of chocolate on the top instead of covering the entire krispy bars with chocolate, which you could do if you wanted to. I felt that was a bit of a faff so I settled quite happily with a thick chocolately topping instead.
This is a very easy way to recreate a guilty pleasure and it went down very well at my toddler group! The krispy part does not stay as crispy as the real thing, but it still tastes delicious!! Why not give these a go? They could be cut into smaller bars (which I did once I photographed them) and would be great served at parties and they could just as easily be made into paper cake cases and topped with chocolate like a more traditional chocolate krispy cake.

mars bars make them so much nicer than just golden syrup dont they? x

WOW! These look amazing! I wish my daughter could have gluten because I would be making these straight away! Mars bars have gluten hidden in them which is such a shame because there is no quick way to recreate such a delicious chocolate bar in something like this recipe! Anyway, I loved looking at the photos even if I can’t make the recipe!!!!
oh no what a shame – is there any other chocolate and caramel bar you could use? Wispa golds maybe or cadburys caramel??? just a thought x

My mum used to make these when I was a child, they were so yummy. I need to make them now! Thanks for recreating a childhood memory 🙂
I want to make these but not sure how to convert the grams to cups or tablespoon. Do you have a converted recipe?
im in love with this recipe! although i didnt have a pan to set the mixture i just used a muffin pan instead!
how do I convert this to USA measurements? As when I do it says the 175g rice krispies is only a half cup? no way that’s right to fill a 7×10 pan…..please help
Made these today and was disappointed! Followed every step but ended up with a layer of fat on the bottom of them so didn’t taste good due to this
Oh really? I make this all the time and it is fine. I am sorry to hear this x

I am so happy you have told me so – we love it too
Hi there, thanks for the yummy recipe. They look really good and can’t wait to make them. I wanted to ask though, which size Mars bars you used for this recipe. Where they standard size or multipack size?
hello thank you for your comment. That is a great question, I think it would have been multi pack size – which makes them smaller than std ones doesn’t it? x
Ive made these 3 now and every time they are gone within a few hours! My husband’s colleagues are always asking for them!
hi Emma, thank you so much for your lovely feedback . I always love to read how other people get on with my recipes. You have made me think that I really ought to make another batch of these soon x
I’ve just woken from a night shift and am thinking batch 4 is imminent to get me through the next one! Love them and could eat the whole tray myself! x
LOL! I made a batch this week ! x
Love this recipe this is my 2nd time following your recipe & it’s a great 1 , every 1 loved them ,i was buying them out my local bakers at £1.10 each & every time i was in asking for some the weren’t ready, baker said Tom as still to put choc on ,Tom came & still none for sale so found your recipe & there much better than the bakers & I told them all lol we had a giggle about it , now making them again by demand every 1 loved them & my kids are grown adults 24 & 25 still loving kids treats, thank you for this great recipe ❤
If I could give these 6 stars I would. Better than most chocolate bars in the shops. Used Cadbury chocolate on the top. Really lovely
