With it being the season to be festive and to eat lots of naughty edibles that you maybe would not normally eat as much of – or is that just me ? *ahem* I was recently sent a Santa’s Sleigh mould from Lakeland.
On the back of the pack in which it is displayed in suggests that gingerbread could be used to make this sweet Christmas treat, but having tried to make a gingebread creation last December and failing miserably, I opted for chocolate instead.
*To make a Chocolate Santa Sleigh like I did, you will need:
200g plain chocolate
400g milk chocolate
300g white chocolate
(I used the cheap chocolate which works out at 30p for 100g and tastes great and melts really well too)
2 peppermint candy canes
edible silver balls
chocolate icing pen
edible silk metallic gold
box of festive coloured foil covered chocolates (I used Lindt)
*Method:
- Using a brush and the edible gold silk I dusted the two main sleigh mould parts – these have decorative patterns etched into the mould cavities
- I melted the milk and plain chocolate together and poured it into the sleigh parts, the reindeer legs and bodies BUT not the rectangle or antler cavities – reserve a tbsp full for assembling later
- I then crushed the candy canes and scattered the pieces in the remaining mould cavities
- Melt the white chocolate and pour over the peppermint pieces
- Now the tricky part – very, VERY carefully you need to place the moulds into a fridge – one with plenty of space! **My tip would be to place the empty moulds onto a tray or bread board first before you fill with chocolate as the silicone moulds are quite bendy and as I lifted mine into the fridge, they bent slightly and the white choc spilled into the milk!
- I left mine to set over night
- Once set completely, carefully, VERY carefully remove the pieces from the mould and you need to work quite quickly and in a cool area so as to avoid melting the chocolate!
- Assemble the reindeer as shown on the pack instructions and return to the fridge until the sleigh has been assembled to avoid them melting
- To assemble the sleigh does take a bit of effort! Instructions are given on the pack and I used melted chocolate to stick the white peppermint chocolate rectangles to the sleigh and a mug to hold the sides in place while I returned it to the fridge to set for another couple of hours
- Once set, remove carefully and set up your sleigh and reindeer. Using some chocolate icing I decorated the tops of the sleigh (the white chocolate parts) with edible silver balls and then filled my sleigh with chocolates
I think this would make a wonderful centre piece at a Christmas party or as a gift if your cello wrapped it. I would be happy to receive one under my tree -yum!!
I was sent a Santa Sleigh mould for the purpose of this review. All comments and photographs taken are my own and true.
