As the nights start to draw in and leaves are shedding from the trees, it is always a little sad to say goodbye to the warm summer months but because I love autumn I am not too sad at the start of another season.
As Halloween is almost upon us too, I thought it would be nice to make something tasty and fun for Burton and Jenson as a treat for when they got home from school and pre school. I saw these edible broomsticks a while ago and have been wanting to have a go at making them myself, and with some Nestle Shredded Wheat in my cupboard I decided that this was the perfect opportunity! I knew that my efforts would not be as neat and tidy as the ones I spotted on pinterest, BUT it was good fun making them and I think as an activity to do with your children it would be a lot of mess fun!
Here is how I made my Edible Witches Broomsticks
- 2 whole Nestle shredded wheat biscuits
- 4 long breadsticks
- 100g chocolate
- popping candy - or some other fun sprinkles of your choice (see pics)
- 25g white marshmallows (or some Fluff spread)
- 2 Fruit Factory fruit wheels
- ½ tbsp golden syrup
- Break the shredded wheats into two
- Melt the chocolate
- Break about ⅓ of the length of each breadstick off(and eat or discard!) and dip the longer pieces in the melted chocolate one at a time - you want to cover about ¾ of the stick
- Allow it to cool for a couple of minutes and then cover in the popping candy/sprinkles of your choice
- Leave to cool completely in the fridge if possible to set
- Meanwhile melt the marshmallows in a heatproof bowl for 30 secs
- Dip the bottom of each of your shredded wheat halves in the mallow gloop and then dip in your sprinkles/popping candy
- You may need to pop the mallows back in the microwave for 10 secs each time as it hardens quite fast
- Place each shredded wheat base onto some greaseproof paper as it will be sticky
- Cut off strips from your fruit wheels enough length to wrap around the top of the shredded wheat
- Use the remaing mallow 'glue' to stick the fruit wheel lentgths to the top of each shredded wheat half, and leave to set
- Then get your now set breadsticks and the remaining melted chocolate (which you may need to met again in the microwave), and once runny enough put some inside the rop of the shredded wheat halves and stick your breadsticks in and if any chocolate is left then use it to keep the breadsticks in place
- Leave to set in the fridge until ready to serve and your witches broomsticks are rready to fly.......in your mouth!
These were fun – if a little stressful at times – to make and they would make great addition to a Halloween party or kids party with a theme such as Room On The broom. Obviously, the shredded wheat is not that sweet so you would only want to eat some of it – the bits that are covered in mallow or chocolate! You could dip all the brush part in white chocolate maybe or spread it with chocolate spread?
I was sent some Nestle cereals for the purpose of taking part in their How To Make The Most Out Of Your Nestle Cereal blogger challenge. I decided to create my own recipe using Shredded Wheat. I have another recipe to follow soon using Golden Grahams.
The good thing about using shredded wheat in a recipe like this is that it is getting children to enjoy the healthy goodness of the cereal but done in a fun way, that they may not notice! Nestle cereals such as Shredded Wheat, or my children’s favourite Cheerios, has used its packaging to make breakfast choices easier for parents. When you see the green banner across the top of a cereal box on the shelf, you know you’re looking at a Nestlé Cereal which contains whole grain (along with at least six vitamins and minerals in all fortified Nestlé Cereals).
Therefore, giving your family a great start to their day.
