For our GBBO finale a lot of bloggers baked pretzels, a bake which I thought might be tricky. However, given that sooo many amazing looking pretzel recipes were submitted, it got me thinking that maybe they were not so hard to make as I had imagined.
With the boys being on half term I also thought it might be something that they would enjoy helping me to make because rolling out the dough would be like moulding play dough. Or so I hoped! I also decided to make pretzel dogs because both boys like hot dogs and I thought they would be fun to make aswell as tasty. Its nice to allow them a chance to make something in the kitchen as they are always very keen to do so!
The recipe I used is one used by Helen who was inspired by the one used by Carolin – I love a bit of recipe recycling!! They may not look as uniformed as Paul and Mary would like or look ever so profressional, but …………… they were made with love and little hands.
Here is my our take on Pretzel Dogs
- 7g dried yeast
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 pinch of salt
- 125ml warm water
- 125ml milk
- 500g strong white flour
- 50ml vegetable oil
- 12 chipolata sausages
- 1 egg, beaten
- Place the yeast, sugar, salt, water, milk & 100g of the flour in a bowl and mix well with a whisk
- Cover with cling film and leave in a warm place for about 2 hours
- Cook the sausages as per the instructions on the pack - but remove from the oven after 25 minutes and allow to cool
- After the 2 hours, add remaining flour and oil to your batter and mix well
- Pre-heat the oven to 200oC / 180oC (fan)
- Bring it together with your hands and knead for around 5 minutes - I put mine in the mixer and used the dough hook on a medium speed for the time as I found the dough quite hard to kneed (or maybe I was being lazy!)
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with cliong film and allow to prove for about 30 -45 minutes until risen
- Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and divide it into 12 pieces.
- Roll each 12th of dough in to long thinish sausages then wrap each one around each sausage
- Place on a lined baking tray and then brush each pretzel dog with beaten egg glaze
- Cook in the oven for about 15 minutes until golden brown
These would make a great bonfire night snack.
and here are the boys getting stuck in helpingThe possibilties of what you can create with pretzel dough is amazing – here are the boys’ attempt at pretzel poos – I mean soft pretzels 😉
What shapes can you come up with???
Helen

They would definitely make really good bonfire snacks. Especially if you stuck a long skewer in them 🙂

I think those pretzel dogs look great- far easier than watching the boys trying to keep theirs inside the bread. And as for creativity…. the possibilities for April Fool’s Day are endless!.
Carolin
How cool are they? I bet the boys loved them and your pretzels look amazing. Perfect colour x

I know a gentleman who would badger me to make those if he saw this post. I will have to make sure I don’t leave it open until I have time!
