Last night the OH and I attended Burton’s first parents evening at Ladybirds. We smiled at each other as we entered and were invited to sit behind a tiny table and sit on tiny toddler chairs!
Amy, Burton’s current key worker (who sadly is leaving next week meaning Burton will be assigned to another key worker!) spent our allotted time showing us two collected pieces of information about him: his workbook and key development criteria.
Burton’s Workbook
This was basically a collection of photos of Burton, observations made about him by his key workers and examples of his drawings and writing over the last 8 months since he started. Here are the things that stood out for me from seeing this for the first time
*How much fun he has from the photos that have been taken showing him playing and doing craft work.
*How much he smiles in said photos (even with tears in his eyes from one taken back in March) -what a poser!
*He drew a picture of me with lots of hair (on my head!) apparently “mummy has a lot of hair”(!) and a body, arms and legs and shoes! At home I have only seen him draw faces.
*He drew a brilliant ladybird and knew the colours and size of ladybirds, and gave it a hat to wear!
*He can write his full name (including surname). I have seen him write Burton but not his surname
*He is good at playing the traffic light game ie. red – stop, amber – walk and green – go!
*Loves playing outside and in the sandpit
*Loves helping other children and staff
*He can identify shapes from objects found in the playroom/classroom
*He asks a lot of questions!

Key Development Criteria
This was a booklet split into different areas of development e.g. numeracy, literacy, social skills etc… and is then separated by ages eg. 22-36 months, 30-50 months, 40-60 months. For the majority Burton is where he should be for his age, but the pleasing bit is that he is also featuring in the 40-60 month for many areas which obviously made his daddy and I happy and very proud.
If I am honest I have felt that since Jenson came along I haven’t dedicated as much time to Burton in developing his skills as I did when it was just the two of us. However, seeing his progress report tonight it made me realise that actually a lot of what I (and his Daddy) have taught him, shown him, discussed with him and continue to demonstrate to him have rubbed off and shaped a lot of his skills at pre school. It has also helped me to identify areas that I can practise with him at home (e.g. writing his full name more).
Another area which Amy discussed with us is how much more confident Burton has become since he started and how he interacts with the children more now, joining in conversations and games. Compared to when he first started when he would just stand back and watch and play by himself. (awwww!).
He now happily chats to children and the staff and they can understand him more now as his speech has also developed a lot since he joined Ladybirds. Despite his showing off at home, at Ladybirds he prefers not to join in with the singing and dancing and likes to watch and look on excitedly jumping up and down!
Overall Amy said that it has been lovely to see the changes in him from how he was when he first started to now. She ended by saying that he is sweet, kind, chatty and helpful and is a very clever little boy 🙂

Ahhhh, he’s doing brilliantly! What a great elephant! I’m very impressed he can write his full name too. Go Burton! You’re allowed to be a proud mummy! Xxx
Dear Beautiful Boy
Well done Burton. What a clever little man. I had plenty of children start in my reception class who weren’t able to write their full names yet, so that fantastic.
But your disclaimer makes me a littl sad. You should be a proud mumma. And feel free to boast away, it’s a mummy’s prerogative to think her children are awesome and to tell everyone about it. X

What a brilliant post, made me smile all the way through. He’s come SO far from when he cried when you dropped him off to obviously loving it now. Ahhh you are completely right to be proud. I think you should delete the disclaimer though!! You have every right to indulge.

This is such a lovely nursery update. Who’d have thought the boy who used to cry going there would love it so much now and be doing so well? Proves that your perseverance at taking him there, and leaving him despite his crying, has paid off.
Well done to Burton but also to you and J for raising such a lovely and clever boy xxx
(you totally don’t need to put a disclaimer on this post :-))

He’s doing so well! I can’t help but want to say take away that disclaimer! I don’t mean anything horrible its just you’re so proud it’s obvious and you shouldn’t be offering apologies almost 🙂 xx

Well done Burton!! I’d be a proud mummy too and be sharing with anyone and everyone. Too many people worry about praising their children and looking like they are boasting these days. I think this is a lovely, heartfelt post showing just how much you love Burton and how very proud you are of him. Love his fish picture! Very sparkly x

GREAT POST! don’t apologise for having a super clever boy! Burton rocks! I love the picture and the fact that he finds a corner to read books by himself – such a nice image. Will you get to keep his drawings at the end of the year? I think you should ask as they’ll make nice memories (and blog posts) x
Susan Mann
Aww bless so cute and what an awesome boy you have x
emsyjo
Burton sounds like a lovely little man in the making, it’s so nice to see them settle in isn’t it. I don’t know if we have parents evenings here as I’ve never heard anyone talk about them but I hope we get some feedback too!
Jennypaulin
you must ask Emma and if they dont ask for some it is nice to know what they get up to, as all Burton talks about is playing and drawing mostly! x
Jennypaulin
thank you for being lovely x
Jennypaulin
