I was looking forward to our October half term for a rest from the school week and all that rushing around it entails. I planned on having a week at home to get back to basics and enjoy doing simple activities that did not cost much money but were still fun and would keep Burton and Jenson entertained. Apart from a trip on the train to visit my friend and a play date at a soft play, we stayed at home the rest of the week and thanks to a fantastic Halloween Fun Pack which we were sent from Flora we had plenty of things to keep us busy and occupied.
The pack was basically a big crate filled with crafts and recipe ideas, and various tools to help us along with a booklet made by Flora with all the information we needed to make so many different things. It was such a great collection of items and both boys were so excited when they saw all of the contents inside the crate.
Here is what we got up to:
GINGERBREAD MEN & TEDDY BEARS
In the recipe we were sent, these were meant to be Gingerbread Skeletons but there was no way that my two were going to master the icing to make their gingerbread creations look like skeletons – I am not even sure I would be able to do it myself! Therefore, we used the same ingredients and method but when it came to decorating, I just put out lots of edible sprinkles and some icing and let them do whatever they liked! I have to say that the biscuits were delicious and made really lovely gingerbread and the best ones we have ever made, and the boys LOVED this activity. It kept them busy for about 2 hours and they were so careful with the piping bags and adding their decorations!
Jelly Worms
Knowing how much my two , especially Jenson, love jelly I knew that these would go down a treat. However, I found them quite tricky to make and even trickier to remove once set from the straws. But they were all eaten and still looked worm-ish enough I think!!
Pumpkin Faces
We were sent 2 pumpkins, thankfully, which saved any arguments over who was going to have his face used for carving! Both Burton and Jenson drew their own pumpkin face design on to their pumpkins, and then Daddy carved out the faces
We were also sent some battery operated tea lights which are a fantastic idea and much safer than normal ones which carry a real flame
Pumpkin Cupcakes
To make use of the pumpkin flesh which we had after carving out our pumpkin faces, I made an Orange and Pumpkin Cake while the boys made some orange & pumpkin cupcakes based on a recipe included in the Flora fun pack booklet. They tasted delicious and a good way of getting some hidden vegetable into your children (and their daddy!) without them really being able to taste it.
Eye And Spoon Race
We were also sent some items with which to make our own eye and spoon race (like an egg and spoon but using ‘eyes’ instead of eggs). The boys and their daddy had great fun playing this in our garden and I was laughing so much watching them all!!! I wrote in more detail about our race here incuding a video.
Halloween Night
Also sent to us in the pack were lots of halloween party decorations and a witches hat and black cape which were perfect because on Friday night we were invited to a friends house for a little Halloween party,so we had great fun decorating the front of the house with our decorations and pumpkins.
It was a lovely half term and thanks to Flora we had plenty of things to keep us busy and we will be making the gingerbread again, because the boys enjoyed making and eating them which never happens, as they usually dont like homemade gingerbread!
You can download the activity pack from Flora here which gives lots of recipe and activity ideas for keeping children busy at home, which as the weather turns more wintry will be ideal. It really is a great booklet filled with crafts and recipes and games.
I was sent a Halloween fun pack from Flora for the purpose of trying it out and writing about it.
