We love books in this house and we also love eating sandwiches so it was perfect to be sent a copy of Sammy and the Skyscraper Sandwich to review.
This beautifully illustrated story book is a pleasure to read because it captivates and engages the reader and the children that he/she is reading it to, because of the wonderful images on every page. The pictures are almost retro in style and remind me of cartoons from my own childhood. I adore them!
The story is about Sammy who decided one day that he was very hungryand *that* is exactly what he does. He builds a sandwich so tall that is ends up taller than his own house.
As the story unfolds, the narrative describes all the fillings Sammy uses to make his skyscraper sandwich and includes some fabulous bright and colourful drawings showing every one of them too.
Asides from the gorgeous illustrations, I also really like the fact that the font is easy to read and large enough for Burton to start reading and recognising some words, especially as the various fillings are accompanied with matching pictures.
The book gives you lots of ideas for some weird and wonderful sandwich fillings, and Burton and Jenson’s favourites are very bog standard in comparison to Sammy’s:
Burton – marmite
Jenson – ham and cheese
Both boys have decided in the last week that they like their sandwiches presented in the following ways: Burton and Jenson really enjoyed this book – the pages are big and made from thick board card so is very durable to little inquisitive book worms and therefore perfect for reading again and again. Burton was fascinated by all the illustartions and he could not believe the size of the finished sandwich and started to imagine what would happen if the skyscraper sandwich came out of the book and on to our table!! Which just goes to show the amazing and wacky insight into a young childs imagination, which is relfected lots of times in the story like when a boy just happens to be passing by Sammy’s house in a hot air balloon!
To whet the appetitie of your child’s imagination, Sammy and the Skyscraper Sandwich by Lorraine Francis and published by Book Island, is a wonderful read and for more information on where it is available to buy please visit Amazon or The Book Depository.
