At the start of the summer, I came home one Saturday afternoon after taking the boys out, to discover that my OH had purchased a BBQ – our first one ever! He was quite excited and I have to admit that there is something about the lure of a BBQ that makes all men happy to cook. I guess it is the hunter gatherer in them that rears to the surface once the coals are lit, that makes them happy to cook meat: beer (or cider in my OH’s case) in hand, tongs in the other and of course it is the best cooked meat EVER!!!
To me, Bank holiday weekends are always about family time and in the warmer months picnics and BBQ’s provide us with our food when we get together with our families and friends. Last month my OH bought us a BBQ – the first one we have ever owned – and it has meant that for the first time ever we are able to host a family BBQ on a Bank Hoilday weekend.
Along with the usual food that gets cooked on a BBQ like sausages, burgers and chicken which is served with salad, dips and bread, I wanted to devise a BBQ recipe which I could call my own and which would be something maybe a little bit different too. I have often made homemade kebabs before on skewers using chicken and peppers or haloumi cheese and vegetables, but whilst browsing the meat counter at my local Morrisons last week, I saw their family pack of meatballs priced at £4 for 25 (or a little less when you buy them as part of their 3 packs of meat for £10 offer) and I had a light bulb moment!
Here is a recipe for Meatball Kebbas which are not only easy to make and appealing to kids (meatballs in pasta are popular in my house), but also work out good value for money and, of course, taste good too!
Based on 3 meatballs per person this recipe makes 8 kebabs
- 1 green pepper
- 1 yellow pepper
- 1 red pepper
- 2 onions
- 1 packet of haloumi cheese
- 24 British beef meatballs
- 8 skewers
- 8 garlic dough balls
Chop the vegetables and cheese into bite sized chunks
Then simply make your kebabs alternatating the meatballs, vegetables, cheese and garlic dough balls on the stick
Keep covered and chilled until needed
Simply cook on your BBQ for about 15 minutes (for as long as the meatballs say they take to cook)
As you can see they did not hang around long!!
Obviously you could put 2 meatballs on each kebab and add some cherry tomatoes and/or mushrooms which would enable you to make 12 kebabs in total. These kebabs are such good value as the breakdown in costs show

I actually use to shop at Morrisons when I lived closer to it, but as I now live in another town I shop at the supermarkets more local to me. When I visited it last week to carry out my shop. I have to be honest that the store blew me away a bit because it had changed so much in the couple of years it has been since I last shopped there. The store has under gone rennovations and been extended, and this was obvious as soon as I walked in as it made a pleasant change to see wide aisles! The produce was very eye catching and looked so fresh – I mean some of the herbs and veg has dry ice blown onto it!.
The prices and quality were really very good, and I was genuinely impressed.
I actually admitted to my OH that even though it will cost me more in petrol to shop at Morrisons, I am seriously termpted going forward to do a monthly shop there because of the prices and quality.
