Here is an easy way to cook succulent Beer Can Chicken on your Barbecue
At the start of the summer, I came home one Saturday afternoon after taking the boys out, to discover that my OH had purchased a BBQ – our first one ever! He was quite excited and I have to admit that there is something about the lure of a BBQ that makes all men happy to cook. I guess it is the hunter gatherer in them that rears to the surface once the coals are lit, that makes them happy to cook meat: beer (or cider in my OH’s case) in hand, tongs in the other and of course it is the best cooked meat EVER!!!
Anyway, we have cooked on it several times now and one thing that we have enjoyed barbecuing is beer can chicken. I first saw Jamie Oliver make one on one of his TV shows a while ago (the one with his mate Jimmy from last year) but he cooked his in the oven. We decided to cook ours on the BBQ as ours is a dome one with a lid and therefore ideal for cooking a whole chicken. It is very easy and tasty and you can add any flavour to your chicken BUT it is crucial that the can is a 330ml sized one which is virtually impossible to find in the supermarkets nowadays, as all beer or cider cans seems to be large! Anyway, you can find some foreign beers or lagers in that size or the other way of doing it, is to take a fizzy pop can, empty it and fill it 3/4 full with your choice of beer or cider.
Here is how we make Beer Can Chicken on the BBQ
You will need:
1 whole chicken
some olive oil
3 /4 can of beer
Herbs/spices of your choice – I used **Rub Me Tender by Life Of Spice
Make a small slit in each drumstcks and wing
massage a little oil all over the chicken
rub in the herbs/spices
sit the chicken on top of the beer can
place the chicken on your BBQ and cook for the time stated in the cooking instructions on the packaging or based on its weight – my chicken took 90 minutes
Check it is cooked and if it is, remove carefully from the BBQ and then carefully remove the beer can.
Carve your chicken and serve
This is a great way to cook your chicken and perfect for some al fresco dining, and even more perfect when you have not had to cook it!!
