I really like making my own burgers and now that the boys enjoy eating them (there has been many refusals to eat them over the years!), I like experimenting with flavours and trying to sneak as many veggies into them as possible! Turkey mince is great for making burgers that I can eat with the boys, due to the low fat content, so when I found that I had been sent some borlotti express beans as part of my DegustaboxUK order, I thought I would try my hand at some Turkey Bean Burgers.
These were very easy to make and I managed to sneak in some veggies too, in the form of an onion and a carrot, which always pleases me! I did pulse the beans briefly in my food processor too, as I was worried that Burton, who does not like baked beans, might be put off at the sight of any bean within his burger! Obviously, if your children are not so afraid of beans, you could add them whole. I was also sent some BBQ toasted bread chips inside my DegustaboxUK so instead of adding breadrcumbs, I blitzed these in my food processor too (along with some fresh basil leaves), and added them to my burger mix.
Once all of the ingredients were made into patties – they looked very colourful (apologies now if you are a non meat eater!)
I made 4 and then with the leftover mixture I made 12 meatballs which I have frozen and will dish up with pasta and sauce another time for the boys.
If you like the sound of my easy Turkey Bean Burgers, then here is the recipe:
- 500g turkey mince - I used the 2% fat version
- 1 onion, peeled and roughly chopped
- 1 carrot, peeled and roughly chopped
- ½ handful fresh basil
- squirt of ketchup
- 1 tsp garlic granules
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 50g breadcrumbs - but I used BBQ toasted bread chips
- 1 x 140g tin of Borlotti Express Beans
- 1 tsp olive oil x 2
- Place the onion and carrot in a food processor and blitz until made into tiny pieces
- preheat a little oil in a non stick pan and over a moderate heat, gently saute the carrot and onion for about 7 minutes until they have softened, leave to one side.
- Place the turkey mince in a large bowl, add the garlic and pepper and ketchup
- in the food processor blitz the beans for a few seconds - you just want them almost crushed
- add to the turkey mince
- now add the basil and crackers to the food processor and blitz to make herby breadcrumbs and add to the other ingredients
- using a fork - or hands like me- mix it all together
- make 4 patties that are not too thick, and meatballs like I did, or 5 patties if you prefer
- place on a plate, cover and chill for at least 1 hour
- when ready to serve:
- preheat the oven to 180oC / 160oC fan
- heat a little oil in a non stick pan, brown on each side for a few minutes and then transfer to an oven proof dish/tray and continue to cook for 15-20 minutes until cooked right through
- serve in a brown roll with some salad and homemade wedges
I love that I got so many hidden extras inside these burgers and managed to get everyone in my family to eat one without any complaining! I call that a success!
