Remember remember the 5th November!!!
With so many Halloween campaigns, merchandise and promotions that have been around recently, it is easy to forget that this Wednesday is Bonfire Night. Once my pumpkins have all been used up in one recipe or another following Halloween, I like to turn my mind to what fun food I can give Burton and Jenson for their tea to celebrate the 5th November.
Last year we did pop along to a small local firework display on the night itself and the boys had such a lovely evening, that the following evening I promised that I would create them a bonfire night tea party. I did not blog about the food then, but I thought I would now so I can offer some inspiration, so maybe you can have something similar yourself with your children because, if you are anything like me, any excuse to have a fun party tea !
Our special themed tea consisted of some hot dogs with a difference served alongside jacket potato wedges and baked beans (and ketchup, of course!), followed by chocolate sparklers and fruit rocket kebabs! The Pretzel dough (which surrounded the sausages for my hot dogs), and the wedges were made using Olive Oil from Spain , because thanks to its fatty acids and oleic acids, as well as some other minor components, olive oil is the healthiest type of fat, and perfect for making delectable dough and tasty potato wedges. Anyway, back to our Bonfire Night Feast – here is how I made it. PRETZEL DOGS (makes 12)
7g dried yeast
1 tbsp sugar
1 pinch of salt
125ml warm water
125ml milk
500g strong white flour
1 tsp dried rosemary
50ml olive oil from Spain
12 good quality chipolata sausages
1 egg, beaten
*Method*
Place the yeast, sugar, salt, rosemary, water, milk & 100g of the flour in a bowl and mix well with a whisk
Cover with cling film and leave in a warm place for about 2 hours
Cook the sausages as per the instructions on the pack – but remove from the oven after 25 minutes and allow to cool
After the 2 hours, add remaining flour and oil to your batter and mix well
Pre-heat the oven to 200oC / 180oC (fan)
Bring it together with your hands and knead for around 5 minutes – I put mine in the mixer and used the dough hook on a medium speed for the time as I found the dough quite hard to kneed (or maybe I was being lazy!)
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with cliong film and allow to prove for about 30 -45 minutes until risen
Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and divide it into 12 pieces.
Roll each 12th of dough in to long thin-ish sausages then wrap each one around each sausage
Place on a lined baking tray and then brush each pretzel dog with beaten egg glaze
Cook in the oven for about 15 minutes until golden brown
JACKET POTATO WEDGES
6 large potatoes, washed but not peeled
2 tbsp approx of Olive oil from Spain
(you could add some herbs or spices if you like , but I left mine plain as the boys were eating them too)
*Method*
Pre heat the oven to 200oC / 180OC (fan)
Cut the potatoes into wedges
Place on a baking tray and add the oil, and using your hands ensure all of the potato wedges have been covered
Cook in the oven for 30-45 minutes until golden brown and cooked
CHOCOLATE SPARKLERS
100g milk chocolate
10 long breadsticks
edible sprinkles, stars etc
*Method*
Melt the chocolate
Dip one end of each breadstick into the melted chocolate and cover about half the stick
Allow the chocolate a few minutes to set
Then cover with your choice of edible sprinkles/stars/popping candy etc.
FRUIT ROCKET KEBABS
your choice of fruit
marshmallows
kebab sticks
*Method*
Skewer the fruit and marshmallows on to the sticks
This was a very yummy tea and both boys and their daddy gobbled it down, and there I was thinking I would have some of the Pretzel Dogs left for the next day, but no they all went! The dough was so light and the addition of the rosemary really lifted the flavour and complemented the porky chipolatas really well. The potato wedges, cooked just in the Olive Oil from Spain, had a lovely flavour and I think I may have eaten most of them myself!

What a fab bonfire night feast! My mum always used to make us sticky toffee for bonfire night, but only then and no other day of the year. I love the sound of the savoury two here, may have to try them out with my little ones….
