Who remembers the story of Sleeping Beauty form their childhood?
Yes, me too. I actually have a copy of the Disney film on VHS video, bought when I was younger when I went through a phase of buying as many of the Disney films as I could on video, to watch with my own children when the time came for me to be a parent! Who knew back then that videos would become obselete and be replaced by DVD’s and digital downloads by the time I had children of my own?!
I was sent a copy of Sleeping Beauty on DVD and I sat and watched it with Burton and Jenson last weekend on a wet Saturday afternoon, to see what they would make of it as they have not watched it before. Jenson found the villianness of the film, Maleficent, a bit too scary to watch and hid his face from her whenever she appeared on the screen. Burton happily saw it all the way through and commented on the similarity between Sleeping Beauty and Frozen (the boy’s current favourite film of (the moment), in that loves first true kiss would awake Princess Aurora from her slumber in the same way it would save Anna from turning to ice.
Disney’s Sleeping Beauty was originally released way back in 1959 and was the studio’s most ambitious animation to date, a lavish spectacle boasting a beautiful waltz-filled score adapted from the music of Tchaikovsky. It is amazing to think that this film was all hand drawn – no special computer animated effects in this production. If you have never seen Sleeping Beauty it before it is well worth watching in this glorious remastered version, and if you have watched it before give it another view because it is a classic and lets face it, didn’t every little girl want to grow up to be like Princess Aurora when they were younger?
The classic Disney film Sleeeping Beauty is being released on DVD/Blu Ray and digital download from Monday 2nd June (2014) as a special ‘Platinum Edition’.
