As I have explained in a previous post, the original Christmas present that we ordered for Burton wasn’t going to arrive in time for Christmas so we had to quickly order something different which would get here (a train track which he loves). However, earlier this week the original present (a ride on battery operated car) turned up and we have hidden it at the OH’s parents until Burton’s birthday in July.
Anyway, the cardboard box it arrived in was HUGE and on Wednesday afternoon I suggested to Burton that we make it into a pirate ship (even though I don’t actually think he even know what one looks like!). This was of course met with excited smiles and a lot of ‘me do it mummy’ when I set about creating my galleon masterpiece *ahem*.
So to make a pirate ship – Mummy Mishaps style – you will need the following
- 1 large cardboard box (the ship itself)
- 1 xmas wrapping paper tube (flagpole)
- 1 square piece of gold wrapping paper (flag)
- 2 kitchen roll tubes (telescopes)
- 2 triangular cardboard shapes that came with said large cardboard box (canons)
- rolled up newspaper balls (canon balls)
- 1 shoe box (treasure chest)
- lots of pretty sparkly things eg. quality street sweets, gold bows, pot pouri decorative balls (treasure)
- crayons (for decorating your pirate ship)
- 1 cowboy hat (captain pirate hat)
- 1 stripey baby sleep suit (pirate shipmate headwear)
put that all together and you get this – just look at our marvellous galleon – ta daaaaah!!
Burton was amazed by Mummy’s excellent skills and handy craft work |
Bet you never thought something so fantastic would be made from such simple items did you??
Then you just need lots of pirate key phrases such as “ahoy there shipmates“, “shiver me timbers” and “aye aye cap’in” and a BIG imagination (helps when you are playing with a 2 1/2 year old as they haven’t seen Pirates Of The Caribbean yet, so cannot fault your pirate ship!) and away you go me hearties!

This post had me laughing especially when you showed your marvelous real life pirate ship. Kids don’t care what it looks like. They just love cardboard boxes any way they come.

That is an excellent pirate ship! I can’t stand the mess enough to cope with one of those.
