Interior lighting can play an important part in the design of your home. You can alter your home’s ambience just by careful positioning of the lighting and the type of fixtures you choose to use. Of course, lighting design also changes from room to room. For example, what works in the kitchen will not necessarily work in the bedroom, and what works in bathroom will not necessarily look right in the living room. Therefore, lighting needs to reflect the functions and feel of each space.
Like any other part of interior décor, lighting design keeps changing. One reason for these changes is technology: as manufacturers design and produce advanced fixtures and bulbs, we incorporate them into our homes. Trends come and go though as each generation has its likes and dislikes, and while some key looks are brought back in the form of upcycling many reappear incorporated into new lighting designs.
Here are some key looks for lighting trends in 2018
Vintage Light Fixtures
These include sconces, lanterns, pendants and chandeliers, all of which are making a comeback in 2018, as crafty home do-it-yourselfers outfit retro fixtures with new technology. It also means finding ways of recycling and upcycling, as designers and crafters with a conscience want to reduce waste and reuse materials as much as possible.
With distinguishable features such as exposed brick, distressed finishes and polished concrete, the industrial trend is set to be as popular as ever this year. The materials used for lighting are metal and/or glass which work perfectly against the backdrop of bare brick walls, and distressed wooden shelves that can be seen in kitchens or loft style bedrooms.
Another option for a kitchen is to add a bit of colour to a light fitting. This is where painted pendants would be good. This is because they keep the honest, simple and functional look but are a little more accommodating for the average living space.
Raw Lighting
The past few years has seen the light bulb become a leading star, rather than a forgotten cameo, in the world of interior design. The raw and unfinished industrial-look of yesteryear has seen a revival of late, and central to that has been the hanging pendant with exposed lightbulb combo that offers the authenticity so many people want to feature in their homes.
With lounges and bedrooms you may want to use something less metallic and raw, softer and more simplistic instead. Choose lighting that is understated, yet stylish and a statement piece at the same time.
Mood Lighting
Lighting is such an essential feature within our homes, and yet many of us don’t tend to think too much about it. Just a few simple changes to the lighting in your home can increase your wellbeing.
For example, a bedroom with cool, white tones will encourage you to feel more relaxed and calmer, which is what you want in the room in which you sleep. If you are a person who struggles to concentrate within a home office or study, then add a medium yellow light, as this will re-create sunlight and therefore, will assist you with feeling happier and in turn, will make you more productive.
