What Would You Do If You Had A Spare Room to Make Over?

Do you often dream about having a room in the house with which you could do anything you wanted with? No having to make it child friendly, or even giving it to your child/children. A room that you could decorate how you wanted, to your taste and with your choice of fabrics and flooring and your own design.

Imagine – a room you can totally make over your way and do whatever you want to inside it! How wonderful.

Well, I was asked what I would do if I suddenly had a free and empty room in my house with which I could do anything I pleased. So many ideas popped into my head but I think, in the end, I would love to make it into a little sanctuary, a room where I could escape the noise and mayhem of my family and relax in peace to listen to music, read a book or maybe just lie down with a face mask on. Things I very rarely do anymore because I find it hard to not only make the time, but hard to find place where I can escape to have a few minutes peace, especially at weekends. A relaxing space where I could also work on my laptop and jot down my ideas for recipes and blog posts, as currently I do this on the sofa or sat on my bed!

So that is what I would do with a free room in my home, but what would my children choose to do if they were asked the same question? Well I asked Burton and Jenson what they would do if they were given a room in our home, emptied and with nothing in it. I told them that they were free to decorate it however they wanted, and use it for anything they wanted and that Mummy and Daddy would let them make all of the decisions themselves. Well, you can imagine who much they loved this idea and their suggestions really made me smile, and marvel at their imaginations!

Firstly, Burton said that he wanted a ‘work’ room where he could get important stuff done (not quite sure what he means by that lol!). In this room he would like a computer for his homework and a television with an endless supply of Scooby Doo cartoons on it. He would also like a sweet cupboard like his very own tuck shop and bizarrely a skeleton (like you see in a doctors surgery!?). He would like a sofa too, but not just any old sofa oh no! He would like a double decker couch (as seen in the Lego movie) made from Lego but real life size. This room would have walls made of Lego which he could use to stick Lego onto and a Star wars bed. Plus – and this is funny!- a buzzer that he can press that I would be able to hear downstairs for when he wanted me or food or drink! He would also like the room to have a ‘magic box’ where magical things would be kept and he would love to have a pet dog that he could keep in his room.

Jenson said that he would like a rainbow room with multi coloured sparkle walls, and a bunk bed – one of those high sleepers with a desk underneath. He too would love a sweet cupboard, and a magic wand that he could use inside the room to make things happen. He would like a Paw Patrol duvet set and a Marshall dog cuddly toy to sit alongside his monkey on his bed. He would also like a bouncy castle inside his room and a paddling pool!

The funny things kids come out with! I do admire their creativity and ideas though. Of course if you need to make more room in your house then you could consider storing your belongings in a safe and secure storage unit, such as those featured at StoreBox.co.uk . These units will enable you the freedom to have an empty room, as well as a good decluttering session which I always find rewarding. Just think a room to make over as you see fit, while your items are kept safe and protected elsewhere in a self contained unit. Allowing you to get rid of things without having to give them away, perfect for when you are short of space or need more.

  1. As my son is about to fly the nest (weeps) this is actually something we have been thinking about. I’d love a sewing room where I could have my fabrics, haberdashery and a big table to craft on. All my patterns and books on display…a bit like the Sewing Bee…that’s my dream.
