Creating the spa experience in your own home

Everyone needs a pamper session now and again. This is especially true if you’re a busy mum. However, between the school runs, the homework sessions and getting food on the table, it can be difficult to find the time to go to your favourite spa for some quality you-time.

However, with a little ingenuity, you can create an indulgent spa experience in your own home.  Whether you want a preening session between your beauty appointments, some quiet time while the kids are at school or a fun evening with the girls, you can spoil yourself with treatments that are sure to relax and reinvigorate. If you’re new to spa-ing at home, take a look at the following advice.

Set the mood

It’s going to be hard to chill out in a bath full of seaweed if you’re irritated by a dripping tap or distracted by a chip in your sink. Equally, if your facemask is cracking because your phone won’t stop ringing, the shine on your spa experience is likely to fade pretty quickly. Get any household niggles sorted before you begin – put away the washing up, sort a sink repair service for your dodgy wash bowl and put your phone on silent.

To create a mellow vibe, close the blinds, light some scented candles and burn incense. Choose fragrances like sandalwood, cardamom and patchouli to get you in a truly relaxed state.

Make your own treatments

There is an array of facial, body, nail and waxing treatments available on the high street so if you want to splash out on some new beauty products, there are plenty to choose from. However, if you’d like to save some cash or you simply enjoy a bit of ‘make and do’, there’s nothing stopping you from creating your own luxurious home treatments.

Here are just some of the many lotions and potions you can whip up in your own home:

Banana facial mask

Not just an energy-boosting snack, the humble banana has hidden depths. To create a moisturising face mask, mash a ripe banana into a smooth paste, add ¼ cup of natural yogurt and 2 tablespoons of honey and mix well. Apply the mixture your face, neck and decolletage and leave to set for 20 minutes for an envy-inducing glow.

2.  Coffee body scrub

If your coffee grinds go straight from your pot to the compost heap, you’re missing a trick. To create an exfoliating scrub, add ⅓ cup of coffee grinds, 1 cup of coconut oil and ½ cup of sugar to a bowl and combine. Apply to damp skin, massage in a circular motion and rinse well.

3. Nail strengthener

If your nails have been weakened by acrylics or they’ve turned dry and brittle as a result of polish or exposure to water, this home remedy should work a treat. Simply combine 1 egg yolk, 1 teaspoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of water and coat your nails in the mixture. Leave on for at least 10 minutes for optimum results.

4.  Sugar wax

To get rid of unwanted hair, all you need is 1 cup of sugar, 4 tablespoons of lemon juice and 4 tablespoons of water. Mix the ingredients in a saucepan, cook on a medium heat and stir. After 5-10 minutes, take the pan off the heat. If the texture resembles wax and is brown in colour, your wax is ready. Pour it into a pot and leave to cool. Dip a lollipop stick in the mixture and apply in the opposite direction to your hair growth. Apply paper sheets to the wax and pull them off for a smooth finish.
