I have never been very good with money, and I seem to spend it way too quickly and when it comes to saving well I never have enough to put away long enough to save for a rainy day or, as my friend puts it, emergency funds!
Therefore, I asked some friends of mine:
what is the best piece of financial advice you have been given – and was it by an actual financial advisor or someone else?
pay your credit card bill off every month…my Dad!
Helen
If you haven’t got it, don’t spend it! …. My mum
Donna
Complete a monthly budget planner work out where you can make savings and what you have left to spend and stick to it. I used to be a mortgage advisor, and give that advice all the time. It really works!
Amanda
Take note of what you spend in a month. Everything. It’ll make you realise where all your money is going every month and is the best basis for any budget planning. Think I heard it on the radio once.
Penny
You can’t take it with you/there’s no pockets in shrouds – and other cheery advice from my Nana!
Lizzie
Avoid any debt like the plague. Always pay up any loans on time.- My lovely dad
Marianne
Never a borrower or a lender be.- My parents!
Jenny
If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it – save up for something rather than use credit -My mum!
Annie
My parents told me to always pay off my credit card bill no matter how tempting each month it was to “carry it over” and I have tried to stick to it, even as a student!
Helen
So it would appear that the best advice we are offered is from family members rather than paid professionals who are trained in offering us financial and legal advice.
