Tales From Pre School – The Jenson Diaries #1 (Flashback Friday)

On Wednesday Jenson started pre-school.

Just writing that down seems a bit surreal to be honest. I mean, last Septmeber when Burton started school, I knew that from April 1st Jenson would get funding for pre school hours, but back then it seemed such a long way ahead. But, of course, it has flown by and his first pre school session was upon us and while I am happy that he is going, I am also a little sad that my youngest is now also getting some Mummy free time!!

However, Jenson was happy to go and as we left to get in the car, the obligatory first day at pre school photos were taken and he was happy to pose and he almost did a little dance – bless him!

When we arrived at the pre school, he suddenly went a little clingy and took my hand and would not let it go for a few minutes, and I did wonder if the happy smiles would turn into unhappy tears. However,  as soon as he unpacked monkey and he was taken to his own peg to hang his coat and bag on, he seemed ok again. I think that seeing the hook with his name on reminded him of seeing Burton do the same at school, and I think this made him accept that staying at pre school on his own (well with monkey) would be ok.

So he happily went outside to join the other children and had a look at what there was and suddenly seeing him stand there with the other children around him, I got all choked up and knew that I was going to cry. It came from nowhere as I had not been feeling *as* emotional as I had with Burton on his first day when he started Ladybirds, but being the silly soppy Mummy I am, the tears appeared ,but I managed to keep them at bay until I had said goodbye to him. Jenson was totally oblivious as we left him happily playing with the sand pit and he did not even look up as we left.

It is an odd feeling. I did not want him to cry and be upset of course that I was leaving him, but when he was not I kind of felt a bit sad because it was like he was not bothered!!  BUT ultimately I was happy that he took it all in his stride, but it did not stop me having a good cry once I was out of earshot!!

3 1/2 hours we returned to collect him and he was playing with some toys when we arrived. I got the biggest cuddle when he saw me. He said he had enjoyed his time and he ate all his lunch (a bacon sandwich in his lunch box as requested!), and made it to the toilet so the spare clothes were not needed.

As we left we were handed a piece of paper which outlined what he had got up to:

Activity : cutting fruit

Indoors he enjoyed played with : the farm

Outside he enjoyed playing with: sand and grit

Snack : fruit and biscuit

Summary : Jenson had a good afternoon and was happy and chatty.

I am so proud of my little boy for coping so well on his first day at pre school. I only hope that when he returns on Monday (initially he is doing 6 hours a week over two afternoons), he will remain as content and will not do a Burton and cry when he is left for the next 6 weeks!!!

  1. Oh this is so wonderful to read. I’ve been wondering how he got on. I think it’s worse with the second as you go home to an empty house, at least with the Burton you got to go home and take your mind away from it by doing something with Jenson.
I love the photos of him. Such a lovely boy. He really looks like Burton in the first photo too!
xx By the way, been meaning to say that I LOVE your new blog look xx

  2. Aww he looks so grown up in his photos. Good to hear he had a good time. I know what you mean about not wanting them to be sad leaving you but then you do feel a bit rubbish if they aren’t cause it’s like they aren’t fussed. I bet his big hug made up for it though. x

  3. Aw this is gorgeous – I love his Gruffalo tracksuit! Mushroom started nursery young (I went back to work part-time when he was one) and the first day he didn’t want to come home! That was hard. Now he’s ready to move into the pre-school group but will be with all his friends so it shouldn’t be too much of a change. However, I imagine I will feel something like this when he starts school – next year! So scary to think. They grow too fast, don’t they!

  4. I’m so glad he did well, it must be a little easier for him to understand having seen Burton going through it all but still you just never know how they will take to it. Still no easier for you though, I went to a meeting at Lucas’ pre-school this week and I got emotional just looking round, I dread to think what I will be like come September! Oh gosh, you are going to have such a quiet house now they are both out for a few hours!! I hope next week goes as well xx

  5. Aww what a huge milestone. And he did so well bless him (as did Monkey!). Little z bawled and bawled and I felt so guilty but I instantly loved his keyworker so that made me feel a lot better about it all. Then he bawled when I picked him up from pure relief I think and said he didn’t want to go back!
