The boys and I love to go on a picnic and they enjoy having books read to them. So when I was approached by Walker Books to host a picture book picnic how could I refuse!
When our goody box arrived I was taken aback by the lovely books we were sent, aswell as the canvas bag, teddy bear cookie cutter and some teddy bear biscuits (yum!) – it was such a wonderful bundle of items!
Luckily, we managed to have our picnic during the sunny week we had the week before last! We packed up our food, our books, some bats and balls and set off to our nearby park with Grandma in tow!
While the boys tucked into their strawberries I read two of the stories to them : The Duckling gets A Cookie by Mo Willems and Butterfly Butterfly by Petr Horacek, both of which I thought were very apt for a picnic in the park.
Then it was time to have a run around. I suggested to Burton that with his bat he could pretend it was a magnifying glass and he could look for some of the insects that were mentioned in Butterfly Butterfly – he sort of understood what I meant and Jenson just enjoyed following after him! The book is full of peep holes which reveal colours and secret bugs on every page, so when we found a sweeping weeping willow tree the boys and I played peek a boo which had them running around in hysterics 🙂
We had a lovely afternoon.
Due to all the rain we have had we have been unable to have another picnic with some different books, which was my plan, so a few days ago Burton and I devised a couple of games whilst looking through the books again using the picture cards we were sent which show illustrations from each book
*matching the picture cards to their relevant books
*memory matching pairs game (we were sent two of each card)
We also spent some time talking about London as one of the books we were sent was
Now at the tender age of 3, Burton doesnt have much knowledge of our capital city yet but he is aware that his ‘Uncle Nick’ (aka my brother) lives there. A Walk In London is a picture book guided tour of London taking in all the sights and wonders that the city has to offer through some wonderful illustrations
Burton enjoyed recognising vehicles and some buildings (not by their actual names but by type) and the ‘grand old duke of york’ (a London Beefeater!)
This is definitely a book for when he is a bit older and I can take him and Jenson to London and probably meet up with Uncle Nick!
If you fancy hosting your own picture book picnic it couldn’t be simpler and it could be held indoors or outdoors – all you need are some books, some food, some friends and your imaginations!

Lovely post. Your pictures are beautiful, too. And what a great idea to use the postcards for a matching game.
