When I was feeling emotional and nostalgic last week as Jenson was on the verge of celebrating his first birthday, I was looking back at all of the photos I have on my mobile phone – as the camera on it has been the tool with which I have taken the most photographs of my boys with.
Whilst trawling through the hundreds of images stored since Jenson was born, I found some of him and Burtonon the rug in the lounge. Now Jenson can’t have been more than a week old in these photos putting Burton at 19 months old and making the photographs about a year old now.
Back then Burton didn’t talk and didn’t even say ‘mama’ or ‘dada’ all he did was make brilliant facial expressions and use his own form of sign language! Which, I hasten to add, he continued to do so until September last year when at last he started to say a few words! He also used to make little noises as if he were speaking, just nothing even vaguely word like!
Anyway, I found a video clip that I took which I had forgotten all about until last week when I found it hidden amongst all the photos! It which shows Burton having a ‘conversation’ with his new baby brother. I am not sure exactly what he is trying to convey but I think he points to the moses basket at one point so maybe he is telling Jenson where his bed is!? He also shows his little brother his pyjamas!
This 30 second clip made me cry. For one thing it seems hard to believe now that a year ago Burton could not talk, because he does it non stop now of course! Yet more than that, he is so little here so small and well baby like, even though at the time compared to Jenson he seemed so grown up suddenly. I mean of course he did look big when he was next to his baby brother, obviously, but its not until I look back at photos and video footage that I realise that he was so small really. My first ‘baby’ was now a ‘big boy’ and I had a Jenson as my (new) baby instead, and Burton became a big brother, and that was how he was referred to from then on.
I often wonder how Burton felt when he was first introduced to this new ‘baby’ in his house that cried and was in Mummy’s arms a lot.
I actually think he took to it really well and as the video showed he had already accepted his new brother and was trying to have a ‘conversation’ with him, and to include him in matters that were important to him, whatever they were!

I can’t believe it’s been a year – I remember you having him like it was yesterday! I’m currently in the process of taking pictures and videos like this. I’ll think of you and this post around this time next year 🙂 xx
what a lovely post my eldest was the same age as Burton when Chloe appeared, he too seemed suddenly to be so grown up, where in reality I too look back now and see from the photos he was indeed still very much a baby himself xx
Aww it’s crazy how fast this last year has gone, isn’t it? I gave birth on Easter Sunday last year and I swear I’ll mention that about 10 million times on Sunday, haha x
I remember when Milo was born Louie (22 months) seemed so grown up. I expected so much from him and thought of him as my big boy. Looking back like you at photos from that time I realise he was barely more than a baby himself bless him.
Lovely flashback – it amazes me when I look at photos and videos of a year ago to see how much Leo has changed so that must be even more strange when you seeing a baby and a toddler. I can’t believe how fast it all goes – something I’m trying hard to remember at the moment lol
