The Bumblejums – A Review

Do you know the way to Bally Bo?

A while ago – just before Jenson was born to be exact! – I received a CD and book all about the Bumblejums aptly entitled ‘Meet The Bumblejums’. It has taken me a while to get this review done as it was a task for Burton and I to do together and time like that has been very rare since his little brother arrived! However, during the last couple of weeks we have managed to listen to the CD a few times and he has had the book read to him at bedtime.

The Bumblejums is the creation of Des Shanahan a Dad, a musician and in his own words also a “part time day dreamer”! The concept behind these fun little characters, is for parents to teach their children how to respect and act responsibly towards nature. The Bumblejums are Jem, Jon, Jay and Jo and they all live in an Eco-friendly habitat in Dandy Forest which is in the land of Bally Bo. These four friends have unique special powers related to nature :

*Jo – looks after the water to help feed the plants
*Jem – makes the sun shine which helps plants to grow
*Jon – looks after the plants to help them grow
*Jay – can control the wind

All of whom helps keep Bally Bo a special and magical place to live and help those who may not change their ways.

The story of the Bumblejums is narrated on the the CD and within the book by Loey who is a friend of the fab four. The illustrations are really wonderful – easy to follow for children like Burton who cannot yet read,

as they are very self-explanatory and the use of bold colours keeps their attention too. The songs performed on the CD are really lovely and catchy – our favourite is ‘Raindrop Cottage’. Burton enjoys ‘dancing’ to the songs 🙂

Des, a parent of two, not only created the Bumblejums and wrote the words and music to the book and CD himself but he also performs the songs and narrates the story! I think he has done a grand job here – the Bumblejums are a lot of fun to read about and their Eco-friendly message is easy to demonstrate through reading their story to our children. Ultimately, the conclusion to their story is while the Bumblejums are always there looking after Bally Bo, you too can be a Bumblejum and help to look after your environment.

The Bumblejums are a great set of characters and their story book and CD are great fun and I am sure your children will enjoy finding out all about them too.
