For this weeks SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND over at Thinly Spread, I have had a go at making homemade playdough. Looking through my store cupboard I found to my dismay that I did not have any cream of tartar, which the recipes called for. However, searching a bit further I came across one which was for a non cook playdough and therefore, did not require any cream of tartar *phew!*
For non cook playdough, you will need the following ingredients
1 cup of flour
1/2 cup of salt
1/2 cup of water
Food colouring of your choice
METHOD
Tip all of the ingredients into a bowl
Mix with a wooden spoon until a dough appears
Then add some drops of food colouring and knead until mixed into the dough (if you have food preparation disposable gloves, it may be worth wearing some as the food colouring does get stuck under your nails!).
If it becomes too sticky just add some more flour and maybe a little extra water.
Mine looks a bit marbled but having not made it before I figured it was ok for a first attempt! All of this took 5 minutes to complete which is no time at all and certainly faster then going to a shop and buying some! Still, it would be interesting to see what it is like to play with!
It is important to keep the playdough in an airtight container so it does not dry up. I made mine last night so I was curious to see what it would be like by the morning, when I showed it to Burton to see what we could make with it. It was actually even more plyable than it was last night – really moveable like playdough!
Burton thought it looked funny and was worth a closer examination!
I think I may need to add a little extra flour as it was maybe a little too sticky too mould with and did need me to wipe our fingers off afterwards with baby wipes.
VERDICT
Considering how easy is was to make and how you could use household items that you keep in your food cupboard to make it with, I would say it is definitely worth a go if you are stuck indoors this weekend. Hopefully after adding a bit more flour and if I were to make another batch with a different colour (say red) maybe Burton and I could make an Iggle Piggle tomorrow! Although with my creative skills *ahem*and his input, I doubt it will look anything like the real thing ha ha! (did you see the gingerbread creatures from last week? Lol)
Don’t forget the check out the other marvellous posts 🙂
Thank you xx

Non cook playdough…how fab is that?! Mine all still play with dough if I make it but how much quicker to cut out the cooking malarkey! I love Burton’t little face in the after shot! Thanks for linking! x

PS just checked your recipe again: did you know that if you bake it at a low temp for a long time, you can harden your creations!! 😉

Hi Maggy
Thats great about cooking our creations so they would harden, I had no idea! Thank you 🙂

That’s wonderful, will definitely make this for the Little Man. Would be nice to put a few drops of aromatherapy oil in, maybe lavender. Add another sense to the experience.
