How to Get Your Kids as Prepared for School as Possible

It’s one thing to get your kids mentally ready for the idea of school, but it’s another to be physically prepared for going to school. There are backpacks to buy, supplies to get, new clothes, and getting food to make their lunches every day.

Don’t sweat the small stuff; we’re here to show you how to get your kid ready for school as best as possible so that everything is taken care of.

Getting Supplies in Order

Make a checklist of all the things you’ll need and then double-check it. You don’t want to miss out on anything and have to make a quick trip to the store the night before the first day of school. Include something fun like an emoji backpack, some fun pencils, shaped erasers, and a lunch bag that’s going to make them stand out from the rest. Make sure that the clothes they have in the closet still fit them and aren’t looking too worn.

Develop Routines

To stop your kids from losing their minds and having panic attacks, develop routinesevery day that keep them organized. They’ll learn what expectations are to be met every day so that they’re not met with sudden surprises or miss deadlines. Having a routine will also let them know that even if this school thing looks scary and foreign, you’re going to be with them every step of the way.

Check Out the School as a Family

Spend a Saturday before the big day going to the school and walking around. Talk about all the fun things they may get to do during the day and scope out where all the different rooms are. If you’re lucky, your chosen school may even offer tours so that the kids can become more familiar with the building. This may ease some of their anxiety in the future so that they’ll be better adjusted during their first day of school.

Listen to Them

When you’re going to pick out supplies, listen to your child. Let them pick out what they want to take to school; this will give them some self-confidence and give them some amount of control over the situation. Their first day is going to be all by themselves, so having supplies that they know they picked out will give them some sense of comfort.

Pay Attention to Their Behaviour

When your child brings their concerns to you, pay attention to what they are and aren’t saying. Engage with your child after a day of school to gauge what their responses were. Act out by switching roles so that the child can pretend to be the teacher or another classmate; this is one of the easiest ways for them to bring out their concerns or act out what happened during the day. That way, if there were any negative events, you can dress them accordingly without drilling your kid for details. It’s not easy for any child heading to school for the first time, and it’s your job to make sure that they’re prepared and comfortable. It’s not going to be an easy first day, but exercise patience and understanding if your child is not the most thrilled about it. They’ll come to understand how important it is once you show them that it can be a fun
