SwimShop Learn to Swim

As parents you want what is best for your children, you want to look aftet them, keep them safe and keep them out of harms way, wherever possible. My OH and I made the decision soon after Burton was born, that we wanted our son to be water confident and be able to swim from as young an age as was possible for him, and therefore, as soon as he was 6 months old we took him to a swimming pool once a week.

Even before we took him to a pool, we got him use to water and being submerged in it from him having his baths (and even showers as he got older), when his Daddy, who took charge of bathtime back then, would really splash him and get him use to having water on his face. Burton LOVED it, and we believe that this really helped him build his water confidence, so that when he entered a swimming pool for the first time, he was not worried and was happy to be dunked in it!

By the time he was 2 he was swimming a little way without any arm bands or floats, and would hang onto daddy and go to the bottom of the pool to collect diving sticks!

Now at almost 6 he is swimming very well and is attending lessons every Saturday. We have raised Jenson to be as confident in the water and he can swim unaided too now , and is fast catching his big brother up! Sadly I do not have any photos of him in the water, as the pool will not allow photography!

However, a recent study discovered that 57% of children aged between 7-11 years old cannot swim. These findings seen hard to believe considering that under the national curriculum, all schools are required to teach children to swim a distance of 25 metres confidently using a range of strokes so that they can safely rescue themselves from drowning. It is estimated that children require at least 25 hours of lessons to swim confidently a distance of 25 metres

In a bid to change this , Swimshop (online stockists of swimming costumes and swim aids) are running a ‘Save a Life, Learn to Swim’ campaign, to encourage kids to get in the pool and get water confident and learn to swim.  By following the link to this PDF download you can obtain a host of fun swimming games which you can enjoy with your children to make them feel more confident in the water. These are also handy workouts for adults.
