A Bike To Remember

boysbikestoday

Receiving your first bike is quite a milestone in your childhood. Burton and Jenson both had their first (balance) bike for their 2nd birthday, and by their following birthdays, they moved onto their ‘big boy’ bikes with pedals. I doubt they will recall this when they are older, but luckily I have photos and videos to show them when they grow up.

My first bike is something I remember fondly. I *think* I must have been 6 or 7 and it was outside our house with a big bow on its handle bars on the morning of my birthday, and it was the coolest bike ever!! It was a Grifter or a Chopper – I know it had the gear stick down the middle and a long seat with the high back. I LOVED it!  I also recall the day that it got a puncture and then it didn’t get repaired and it sat for ages at the office where my Dad used to work, and then I have no idea what happened to it. But I wish we had kept it because even now it would have been cool in a retro way!

My brother’s first bike was a BMX , a red and yellow one, as it was the early 1980’s and these bikes were all the rage. By the time he had this bike I had moved on to a pinky purple Raleigh bike and we had also moved house, to a cul de sac so we would build ramps in our road and do stunts!! BMX bikes have stood the test of time of course as they are still available to buy nowadays.

Thinking about the bikes my brother and I had a kids, got me wondering if other people could remember what their first bike was, so I asked the question and these kind bloggers told me:

I have no clue, probably a hand me down from my brother

A blue 1970’s bike with stabilisers aged 7. I had a photo with me on it topless as it was so hot the year I got it for my birthday. Think mine was a Raleigh
Aly

A pretty purple Raleigh bike called Bianca. It would have been end of the 80’s, very early nineties. I was probably about 6 or 7.

Awww I had a yellow and black BMX aged 3… It was the business. Loved that bike so much!
Simone

My first was a universal BMX, it was a bag of sh**e but I ran it to death
Paul

Oh mine was a second hand Raleigh bike, it was silver, and had a white seat/saddle?! I distinctly remember my dad coming up to our front gates with it, and being so excited. It had to be a Raleigh in our area, as we were so close to the Nottingham factory, it was the law

The bike I remember was a Blue Raleigh. I once ran over a stone and flew over the handlebars with serious speed. Still have the scars. Probably the fastest I have ever been
Kelly

Bike with a basket on the front which I quickly put down and then climbed on my brother’s new BMX which was much nicer – I have never had a “women’s” bike since getting my first this year hopefully I was about 5
