10 Ways to Decorate the Walls of Your Home

A freshly painted wall – white washed or otherwise – can be an exciting prospect for the amateur interior designer. A room can suddenly have so much potential. However, such a blank canvas can also be quite daunting. You do not want to spoil this opportunity with an ill-judged mural or poster bought from the local market. Here are some ideas of what to do with those blank walls.

Original Art Work

Original works of art are investments as well as unique ways to decorate your home. Visit as many galleries online and offline as possible, and bear in mind the overall theme or mood you want to create for your room. Art work should be hung so as the piece is at eye level.

Bring the Outdoors In

Decorating a room with natural ornaments such as mounted antlers, decorative branches and other found objects can breathe a new lease of life into a space. Continuing the natural theme with modern floral patterns can also add nicely to the effect.

Wall Hanging

Wall hangings can get a bad rap these days, sometimes thought of as the preserve of the old-fashioned hippy. However, there are lots of wonderfully creative wall hangings that you can produce yourself which really set off a room. Again, found objects can really work when incorporated into a tasteful hanging.

Wall Lamps

Getting the right lighting for your room is vital to creating the atmosphere and style you want to achieve. Many people go for wall lamps rather than ceiling lights as they can add a specific style to a room and give more varied levels of lighting.

Bunting

Used in moderation, bunting can provide a wall some decoration without making it look cluttered or too ‘busy’.

Unusual Frames

Making a feature of the frames on photographs, posters, postcards and prints can really liven up a wall. Shabby wooden frames sitting alongside ornate classical ones can produce a delightfully quirky effect.

Silhouette Images

Creating silhouette images could not be easier. Simply Google search for your desired image (preferably something with a very recognisable outline), print out, cut out and then do the same on your preferred coloured paper. Frame the silhouette for a lovely piece of your own art work.

Family Portrait

Professional photography studios such as Venture can produce wonderful pictures of your family. Such images can bring out your family’s personality and serve as a great memento of a time in your lives together.

Decal

Decals are images cut out of materials such as vinyl which can be stuck directly on to walls. Some people prefer text phrases while others have pictures of flowers or, mainly for children’s bedrooms, cartoon characters.

Deconstructed Map

This is another simple idea which looks really great. All you need to do is find a large map (a map of the world works best) cut into sections, then frame the individual sections and arrange close to each other.
