How to Stop Worrying About Your Elderly Loved Ones this Winter

shutterstock_117136528The wellbeing of an elderly relative can weigh heavy on one’s mind. If they have lost a partner, are increasingly lonely and perhaps feeling more isolated as their friends are finding it more difficult to visit, you’re anxiety may increase. Why not get a stairlift company to install a lift which will help them be more mobile at home, and get top and down stairs safely.

Add to that the extra dangers which come with the winter months and you may feel like you need some support. Here are some considerations for easing your worries when it comes to your elderly loved one.

Consider a Carer

A carer can take off a lot of the pressure if you are looking after an elderly loved one. Knowing someone is checking in on your relative every morning and every evening gives great peace of mind while they can also run other errands which your busy schedule may not allow. On top of this, there is the added bonus of someone else to talk to and give companionship meaning a carer can make a real difference to an elderly person’s life. There are different levels of service available, check the various care at home options here.

Encourage them to Socialise

One of the best boosts for an older persons wellbeing is to have increased social interactions. Find out about clubs and groups who meet in your local area which are especially for older people. These sometimes have transport services to make them more accessible to people with different mobility needs. As well as combatting loneliness these groups will improve an elderly persons mental health and in some cases mean they get more exercise. Knowing they are mixing with their peers and regularly getting out will help you rest assured that your relative is not feeling isolated in their home.

Introduce them to a Befriender Service

Charities such as AgeUK reacted to research which found that around 1 million older people often go a full month without speaking to anyone by launching a befriending service. This service works by assigning people a befriender who regularly meets them or gets in touch over the phone to provide conversation and companionship. Find out more details here.

Make them Internet Savvy

Another way to combat loneliness is to introduce your relative to the social possibilities of the World Wide Web. Social networks are becoming easier to use and they often have groups which encourage people to share memories about different aspects of their lives such as the area where they grew up.

Know How Much Help you are Entitled to

Another worry you or your loved one is likely to have will be connected to money. As the temperature drops, the heating will need to be turned up. This means higher heating bills. There are various government schemes to help with these expenses. Find out if your relative is entitled to any benefits or grants here.
