As half-term rapidly approaches, that big summer getaway seems but a distant memory, and the kids are getting restless. With no money in the kitty to fund another foray overseas, it is time to consider an option that’s closer to home – the British getaway

A fabulous day out in Blackpool

On England’s charming North West coastline beckons a seaside resort filled with roaring rollercoasters, kiss me quick hats and penny arcades. For those averse to the big rides of Blackpool Pleasure Beach, there are still plenty of thrills to be sought; visit nearby Lytham-St-Anne’s for a quick game of pitch and putt, or for those looking to capitalize on the carnival check out Ripley’s Believe it or Not which also appears in London, with eight themed galleries of the decidedly odd.

A girl’s day out in beautiful Bath

An altogether more tranquil prospect, elegant Bath promises sweeping architecture, endless window shopping and street entertainment – making it perfect for mother and daughter bonding. Detox in one of the city’s famed Roman bathhouse or indulge in afternoon tea in Sally Lunn’s. If you’re on a budget you could even spend a relaxed afternoon admiring the designs in the Fashion Museum, which houses everything from intricate Georgian gloves to the 2013 Dress of the Year!

 An adventurous weekend in Edinburgh

Lonely Planet have voted it the third best country in the world to visit in 2014, so up sticks and take a jaunt to bonny Scotland. Keep a keen eye on the National Rail deals between London and Edinburgh – tickets can cost as little as £20.00 for one way. On arrival, forget the crowded castle and instead let yourself be dazzled by the illusions of the Camera Obscura at the top of the Royal Mile. On day two, partake in the Edinburgh Old Town Treasure Trail, an adventurous hunt through the city sights that will lead to buried treasure!
