There are many reasons why owners give their dogs to rescue centres, and the main one isn’t to do with behavioral ones, it is because of a mismatch between the owner’s life style and the dog’s needs, and this is generally related to breed.
Today most people are looking for breed dogs, and many different breeds of rescue dogs can be found, but generally the majority of rescue dogs don’t have a specific breed; they are mongrels or if you like Heinz 57 dogs. Many of them do get adopted, so do think about giving them a chance, it’s not their fault they don’t have a pedigree. But if you really want a breed dog, then these are the most popular. You always check to see if your breed of dog is covered by your insurance company as some breeds may not be.
Terriers
You will find many different terrier breeds, but they are very popular and often they are the first to be adopted. Border Terriers and Jack Russell Terriers are particularly popular. However don’t think that just because a small terrier means that it will be low maintenance; to do so is a huge mistake. Terriers can be very demanding dogs. They are very lively, very bright, and can be very naughty so they need firm handling and training. They can also be quite snappy and decidedly stubborn, but of course they are adorable.
The Border Collie
The Border Collie is another popular breed, but they can be quite a handful if you haven’t owned one before. They are working dogs and they are still sheepdogs at heart; in fact the herding instinct is in their genes. They need a lot of exercise and can be very energetic, so be prepared for lots of exercise. Border collies heed a couple of hours exercise a day if they are to remain fit and healthy. The reason why they are there is likely to be that their previous owner was unable to provide what the animal needs.
The German Shepherd
The German Shepherd is a very beautiful dog and very popular. Along with the Border Collie it is one of the two most intelligent rescue dogs you are likely to find. Originally bred as a working dog, mostly for herding sheep, it is frequently used in security roles in the military and the police. It is also very loyal and generally very eager to learn. A rescue German Shepherd can make an excellent pet and will respond to care and attention, but it does need a great deal of both of them.
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is probably the most popular rescue dog. The breed is a little enigmatic. On one hand the ‘Staffy‘ is a fun loving family dog which can be a little boisterous, and on the other hand it has a reputation as an aggressive fighting dog, a reputation that encourages people who want a dog to give them status. With the right care, handling and training it can make a loyal loving pet.
