Meaningful Memories – My Favourite Mix Tape Songs When I was 14 (#Flashback Friday)

I do actually really love music, and when I was growing up it played a BIG part in my life. I was always listening to Radio 1 to make sure I knew all the latest songs, I would always try to listen to the Top 40 on a Sunday teatime or at least the top 10, and I bought Smash Hits magazine (remember that?)  so I could read about my favourite bands and singers of the day, and stick any free posters of my favourites on my wall. I guess looking back on this and reading what I have just written, maybe I was a little obsessed! However, I just think that I lost myself in music, it was my escape, and even though I am tone deaf, I could remember the lyrics to songs I liked very quickly and easily, and I would sing along, dance along and just immerse myself in my favourite pop music.

For this weeks Flashback Friday instead of looking back at some photgraphic flashbacks, I am going to share some music memories instead, and in doing so join in with Hidden Hearing‘s Meaningful Memories challenge (more about this at the bottom of this post). I am going to take you back to 1987/1988 for this, and here is how I looked back then

me1988

This is kind of a dedication to my Mum in a way, because these songs remind me of car journeys in her car, whenever she took my brother and I out for the day. I would always make a mix tape and include songs that we liked from the time and Mum would play it in her car, which was great because we would sing along and they made me happy whenever they were played. There would have been more than these 5 songs, but these are ones that stand out the most and I think they are fab songs as a result (and I know that if my Mum reads this – it will raise a smile on her face too )

A-ha The Sun Always Shines On Tv
So aswell as being an amazing song, this song reminds me of one particular road trip my Mum took my brother on. The song was a hit in 1986 when my family and I were still living in Newbury, Berkshire before we moved to Devon, it was number 1 in the January and we moved in the August. Anyway, at the time my parents were separated and one day (maybe  Sunday???) Mum took Nick and I for a drive I think to Reading, and we just drove around, stopping to take our dog Libby for a walk,  and we all loved this song, and we had it on repeat in the car, and I would not like to say how many times we listened to it in a row!!! A lot though!!

Aztec Camera Somewhere In My Heart
Aztec Camera did not have many hit records, but my Mum and I loved this song! It is just a really uplifting happy song with great lyrics and it is really catchy.  “a vision of love, wearing boxing gloves and singing hearts and flowers” – yes I still remember the words after all these years!

Fairground Attraction – Perfect
Another incredibly catchy song that you cannot help but sing along to! This was another album that Mum had which she and I enjoyed listening to. I love the twangs of the instruments, the infectious beat and her voice is amazing too.

Pet Shop Boys – It’s A Sin
The three of us were all fans of this band and this song was a big number one hit of the time, and it was another one that we would turn the volume up  and sing long to!

Berlinda Carlisle –  Heaven Is A Place On Earth
My brother and I liked this song and I used to record myself singing along to it on my cassette recorder lol! (no idea why as I cannot sing in tune).

So there you have it, 5 songs from my teenage years which I think are brilliant tunes and I still sing along to them whenever I hear them on the radio now.

So what 5 songs have meaningful memories for you?  Maybe there are from your childhood, your wedding, a holiday – it does not matter as long as they have a meaning to you. If  you blog about your songs, you can enter to win a £100 voucher of your choice – either from ASOS, ITunes or Amazon. And of course link up to Flashback Friday 🙂

To enter simply email jessie.rasmussen@zazzlemedia.co.uk and the deadline for all posts to be live is  28th July, 2014 and you can be as creative as you wish, using photos and /or videos as I have done.

Remember – a flashback can be from any time whether it be yesterday, last week, last month, last year or yesteryear! It can be a flashback of your own, your children, your partner or your friends.

  1. Wow! What a fab list. I have to admit (bar the Pet Shop Boys) all of those would definitely be on my list (and the Pet Shop Boys is just a sibling, never to be resolved thing!).

Thank you Jen, you are right I have just spent a wonderful 15 minutes or so immersed in such happy memories of times spent with my lovely children, the only thing you got wrong was the timing it was the 80’s not 90’s we used to drive around blasting out these and other brilliant tunes! We moved down to the West Country in the summer of 1986 when you were the age you were in that photo! I wonder if Nick remembers all those tunes, bet he does but would be far too embarrassed to admit to it now as he became such a fan of the likes of Gun’s and Roses soon after!! A truly memorable Friday flashback xx

Ahh, what wonderful memories and a collection of fantastic songs. Now, I remember a car journey to Barnstaple (once you had moved to North Devon) with you and your Mum and listening to Simple Minds, then on the return trip we listened to Alf by Alison Moyet. Those two artists always remind me of you Annie. Such happy days and happy memories. Love Kxxx
