Burton’s First Sports Day (#flashbackfriday)

Last week I did a flashback to uhmmm well the day before to write about Jenson’s first sports day. This week’s flashback post is whizzing back in time to….. yesterday as this was Burton’s first ever sports day!

The school has been busy practising for sports day (or sports afternoon as Burton keeps correcting me!) all week so there was a huge sigh of relief to everyone I think that the rain stayed away, and the afternoon of sport could take place. I arrived assuming that we spectators would be sat in the top playing field watching the children do races like the egg and spoon, relay, running etc… but no this was like no sports day like I have ever been to before. Mind you asides from Jenson’s last week, I have not been to one since I participated in one myself at school so I guess it stands to reason that sports day have chnaged somewhat in the last 25 years!

Anyway, so for the first half an hour or so the school was split into teams and each team was a mix of all the children from all the classes from reception up to year 6 so that the younger ones were looked after by the older ones. This was actually really lovely to see.  Each team took part in an activity for about 5 minutes until the whistle blew and then they moved on to another one, and we followed  each group round that out children were in.

Awww he concentrated so hard in the egg and spoon race and managed to get the egg to stay on the spoon further than anyone else, but it did fall off just before he got to the finishing line!

After the final whistle was blown, after each activity had been completed by each team, the whole school moved up to the top playing field  and then there were relay races and some mini marathons. To be honest this part was a little boring for those of us whose children are in reception, because for about 40 minutes our children had to sit and wait while the older ones ran around in races. I think they all did well to sit so patiently for so long! Finally, Seahorses (Burton’s class) were divided into groups of 6 and ran a 200m race and the top 4 received a medal. Sadly for Burton he did not come away with a medal this time, BUT as I assured him it is the taking part that matters and he has a whole year to practise his running for next years sports day afternoon!

  1. Sports day definitely isn’t like how I remember mine. It’s still fun to go and watch but it is more about taking part as a team and not as an individual at our school. The kids all compete for points for their house. Looks like he was concentrating really hard at the egg and spoon race! x
