World Cup fever hits parents’ pockets

Not being big football fans I do not have to worry (yet at least) about buying team shirts and football merchandise for my boys. However, as this post shows, they cost a lot.

As World Cup fever continues to engulf the country and the rest of the world, parents can expect to be soon asked to shell out a significant sum in order to buy their children their favourite kit. While the majority of children from in the UK will be asking for the England shirt worn by the likes of Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard, there is no shortage of varied shirts out there that could take your child’s eye for no other reason than the colour.

While England’s classic white shirt has been the most popular among UK fans ahead of this World Cup, Brazil’s traditional yellow jersey have again been voted the best kit in the world by many football fans. The host nation has created a special atmosphere during the tournament so far, and the yellow colours of Brazil have been hard to miss at every game so far in this World Cup.

If yellow’s not your child’s favourite colour, maybe you’ll be soon heading out looking for an orange Ivory Coast or Netherlands jersey. It certainly adds an added dimension to the tournament if your 7-year-old suddenly decides to give up on England and become a Ghana fan based purely on their kit and the winger’s elaborate hairstyle.

The downside of treating your young football fan with his favourite team’s strip is the price. Despite being the subject of significant criticism in recent year, manufacturers have refused to lower their outrageous prices for football kits.

An England home shirt will set you back almost £40, and that’s before little Benji decides he wants Oxlade-Chamberlain printed on the back. With another £20 for ‘official’ shorts and £10 for socks, your young football fan could cost you around £80 for a kit that will be out of date in six months.
