Children’s TV Top Mum’s – Who Do You Think Is A Top Mum?

When you become a parent there is no handbook to warn you about everything that will happen to you, or to fully prepare you for how you will feel and face situations you encounter. Afterall every child is different, every experience unique and every parent has thier own views on how to be the best one they can be. I am the first to admit that I have found being a Mummy to Burton and Jenson hard going most of the time, and I do not always tackle it very well. More often than not I do lose my patience, raise my voice and shout at them. I wish I did not to be honest, but I am not the perfect Mum by any means but I do try my best.

The Baby Website has recently revealed its Top 10 Most Awesome TV Mums (and why we love them) ahead of Mothers Day, and this got me thinking about which Mum’s on television I would like to be more like. You know the ones who seem to be practically perfect in everyway, and who never seem to see the need to raise their voices and appear calm at all times, even when faced with the challenges of being a Mummy. Is that even possible in real life?

I thought about the shows made for children that I let Burton and Jenson watch and in particular about how they portray the ‘mummy’ characters,  and what example they are setting their audience. Bearing in mind, of course,  that these are the programmes which influence our little ones as they grow up from a young age. I do think that Children’s TV Mums are much more lovely than the Mums shown on grown up TV shows, and I have to admit to sometimes even wishing I were a bit more like some of them!

Here are 5 children’s TV Mum’s who my boys are familiar with, but are they good parenting role models? Would I want to be more like them?

Mrs Pontipine

mrspontepine
A mother to 8 children, Mrs Pontipine takes a rather laid back view to parenting as she often allows her little ones to wonder off outside the family home and play hide and seek among the plant pots, holes and trees of the Night Garden. As the ryhme says

.….even though they’re small
and even when there’s 10 of them
they’re hardly there at all

Even when she is unable to find them she does not appear worried, nor does she shout for them to “come here at once”. She simply retreats home with her husband and awaits their return, which always happens of course. Mrs Pontipine does not show herself to be the best cook either , whenever a feast is prepared for her family, she always offers them lots of sweets and cakes – I have never seen any vegetables or home cooked meals put in front of them!

Queen Martha

mikesmum

Mum to Evie and MIke and married to a King who is never at home, Queen Martha lives most of the time like a single Mum except she seems to leave her children to their own devices most of the time. With a daughter who practices magic, a family of trolls who visit the castle and a pair of dragons, not to mention a son who is a knight in training, I am surprised this Mum is not at the end of her tether, and sipping something stronger than tea! However, she remains calm and extemely laid back at whatever adventures and mishaps, Mike gets himself and the kingdom of Glendragon into. She is there to calmly offer words of wisdom which both her children need.

Sarah Clifton
patswife

Is married to Greendale’s most exuberant inhabitant, Postman Pat and is a Mum to their son Julien. Once a stay at home Mum, Sarah now works at the train station cafe. Just like her husband, Sarah is all to happy to help out at any of the village events and appears unflustered and calm. Amazingly, she never seems to question how Pat manages to complete his rounds when he is always so busy helping out everyone else! I think she does well to remain so patient!

Mummy Pig
mummypig

Is married to Daddy Pig and has two children Peppa and George. Mummy Pig is a stay at home piggy although she does seem to do some work from home which involves her computer. Mummy Pig is funny and enjoys making little digs at her husband but you can see how much she loves him, even if he can be annoying! She does have a fiesty side though, and will stand up for her family if they are insulted and she is also easily flustered and can be a little clumsy. But she is a very lovely Mummy and while she corrects her children when they misbehave, she remains calmly spoken and rational. Even when they splash in muddy puddles!!

Joy OdellTopsymum

Is the Mum to twins Topsy and Tim and she is the TV Mum I would most like to be like. She is just such a good Mum. Patient, softly spoken, kind and caring and she has twins – double trouble and yet she seems remarkable stress free and both childen are well behaved and polite. She never looks harrassed, her house looks tidy and she gets her own way about moving house!  A stay at home Mum, Joy also finds time to visit her friends on her own, and her fellow Mum friends often pop over for playdates with their children, who are friends with the twins. I love the way she lets her children help out at so many things around the home, and it just makes me think I should allow mine to do more with me! I wish I was able to speak to my two boys as calmly as she talks to her twins, and I wish mine were as well behaved!! *sighs* Yep, she makes me feel pretty inadequate actually and my boys clearly think she is lovely too and that, says I, is that!!

Maybe I should adopt some of Joy’s parenting skills as they clearly work with her two children?

  1. I am loving these posts. I dont recognise any of the mums you have featured as my “little ones” are now teens but I love the sound of these ladies! And totally agree with Mrs Pontipine, she sounds amazing!!!

  2. Goodness, I only recognise Sarah and Mrs Pontipine and I suddenly feel a bit sad about that! I did think the Pontipines attitude was a bit too laid back though, even for me! It’s Mrs Weasley for me (do films count?!) I love her chaotic house and her loving bossiness – I do feel a bit like her quite a lot of the time!

  3. I am definitely a Mrs Pontepine, I like neglectful parenting it fosters a sense of adventure and confidence. Or maybe i just use that as an excuse so I can sit reading blogs on my phone whilst they play 🙂

  4. Ahh, I love these – although I’m so gutted that we left the UK before Topsy and Tim showed – we can’t get it over here and I feel like we’re missing out! I think I have to agree with you and plump for Mummy Pig – any family that ends every day by lying on the floor and laughing has got to be good! x
