One of the things I am not looking forward to now that Burton has started school is having to make costumes for him. Not being especially crafty or clever with a needle and cotton (or own a sewing machine) I am dreading the letter home asking for him to have a childrens fancy dress costume for book week! I can remember friends of mine telling me about the amount of outfits they had to make or provide for their children, and how they would be running aorund the night before trying to see what they could cobble together!
Back in my 20’s when I used to dress up in fancy dress for New Years Eve I was never very good at making my own costumes. I did try a couple of times and even used a sewing machine belonging to my friend’s mum, but my efforts were never very good. However, luckily after a few cheeky vinos it didn’t matter to me or anyone else anyway how good (or not good) my fancy dress costume was! I preferred to piece together items that I bought from charity shops instead, rather than make something from material.
For his Christmas performance, Burton had to be dressed up as a star and I did actually contemplate making a cardboard star, cover it with silver foil and somehow attach it to a black jumper. I mean, how had could that have been??? However, in the end seeing how reasonsably priced a bought and ready made star costume was from the supermarket, I opted to buy him his star which saved me a lot of time and mess! Plus it can be put away for another time or maybe even for Jenson as he may be a star in his school play one day.
Of course when Jenson does start school, if I am asked to provide an animal book week fancy dress costume then I know staright away which one he would love to own!!
