Choosing A Fireplace

With the weather being so drab, wet and cold it does make me wish sometimes that we had a fireplace in our lounge so that I could warm the room up at the flick of a switch. I have always liked the idea of having a focal point in the living room other than the television, and there are so many different types of fires and surrounds to choose from I am sure there is one that I could happily fall in love with.

At the first house I ever bought my then boyfriend and I rennovated the lounge and ripped out the awful brick wall feature which took up an entire length of one of the walls! It was such a dark and ugly wall and took up so much space and was not in keeping with our taste. Once it was removed, the carpet removed and wooden flooring laid down in its place and the walls had been painted a lovely coffee cream colour, we went about looking for  electric fires in the sale. In the end we chose a very contemporary design which contained white pebbles instead of fake wooden logs or black coals and I loved it! Even without switching it on, it really added a talking point to the room and was definitely a worthy focal point.

At the house I am at now, my OH and I cannot decide whether or not to include a fireplace when we rennovate our living room. I am saying ‘yes’ and my OH is shaking his head as he wants our large flatscreen TV to be the focal point where a fireplace would go! I have told him that while I do not want a traditional gas fire, I think a modern gas fire could really improve the room and make for a cosy dwelling to relax in during the winter months.

What do you think?
To have a fire or not have a fire – that is the question!!
