It is funny isn’t it how a certain smell or a song can transport you back to a time from your past and suddenly you are able to remember exactly where you were and what you were doing.
I was driving in the car earlier in the week on the school run when Gangsta’s Paradise by Coolio came on and I started singing along, maybe a little too loudly and certainly out of tune (sorry Burton and Jenson!). Always immediately whenever I hear that song it takes me back to 1996. I think the song topped the charts at the start of the year and it was a favourite song to get up and dance/sing aloud to on a night out when I was at university back in 1996. Possibly a night out when I would have been dressed up like this
The one night in particular that this song always makes me think back to, was a night out at my the student union at DeMontfort University with my friend and fellow housemate Katrina. Now I do know that a LOT of cheeky vimtos had been consumed that night and a lot of dancing had taken place and clearly neither of us pulled that night because I know we left together and walked home together! Anyway, near the end of the night Gangsta’s Paradise came on and me and Trine got on the dance floor and got down and dirty and sang our hearts out to the song while doing all the rapper -esque hand signs lol!
BUT our escapades do not end there oh no no no. I guess the union finished arounf 1am and when we walked out the chuck wagon was parked outside of the university carpark and entrance, and was of course heaving with drunk students wanting to finish their night off with a burger or hot dog. Now I cannot remember exactly how Katrina and I managed to do this, but we ended up getting inside the chuck wagon and ended up helping the man who worked in it to take orders and serve up the food! Ha ha it was so funny and we probably left there about 2am and then walked the 20 minute trek back to our house – which no doubt with us being a bit drunk and with the giggles and possibly eating a burger ourselves, took twice as long!
I do remember that when we eventually stumbled in and managed to get the key in the lock and open it and of course with all of our house mates already tucked up in bed and asleep, there was a lot of “ssssssssshhhhhhhhhhh” ing while tryign to be seneible and quiet going on – when in reality we were being really loud! Then we decided it would be a really good idea to ring random phone numbers – like literally make up telephone numbersd and see if anyone would pick up. I cannot actually remember now if anyone ever did pick up and if they did what we would have said to them! Bit childish I know, but when drunk at 3am in the morning it seemed funny! The problem was I left Katrina with the phone as I went on up to bed which was a BIG mistake because she had a tendancy to call her boyfriend who lived in Manchester and then fall asleep while still connected to his mobile!!!
So that is the memory that I associate with that song – and a very happy and fun one it is too.
