I love watching life style TV shows like Location Location and Escape To The Country where couples are helped to find their dream houses in a new town, city or village. I guess it is the voyeur in me that is naturally nosey and likes having a look around another people’s properties! My brother currently lives in central London and as much as he says he loves the buzz of living in our nations capital, I also know that deep down he wishes he could lay down some roots and buy his own home. But, of course, as long as he resides in London this will never be an option (unless he marries a very rich woman of course!).
Indeed many of his friends have now settled down and started a family of thier own and it has also meant that they have moved out of London and are now commuting in now from a more rural area. Places like Edenbridge in Kent have become popular as it is a beautiful town which mixes both old English heritage with a contemporary perpsective. This small medieval market town situated in the heart of the Kentish weald is an ideal location for anyone who wants to be close to both London and live within the heart of the countryside. Of course relocating to the country is not exclusive to the high flyers, the commuters or just families, retired people may also be on the look out for a slower pace pf life and places like Kent may be perfect for them too. Retirement apartments in Edenbridge are located close to the train station, so access to the rest of the UK is relatively easy. If you are thinking of changing your lifestyle as a result of retirement, then Edenbridge can provide many options.
New town, new opportunities
Retirement is often seen as an opportunity for positive change. Any life changing circumstances offer an opportunity to embrace new interests and a new social life. Contemporary retirement apartments will give you the security to expand your horizons. If you move to Edenbridge you’ll be moving to a small market town where the population is only around 7,000, which is set within the heart of National Trust territory. Hever Castle and the village of Chiddingstone are only a couple of miles away, and you can easily reach these destinations using public transport. This small town is also home to numerous societies. If you are keen on walking, then why not join the Edenbridge Strollers? Amateur historians are welcome at the local museum.
Every year the Edenbridge Bonfire Society burns an effigy of an international celebrity as part of the town’s bonfire night celebrations. This community activity has garnered international acclaim and you could become part of the organising committee, should you wish to make new friends. I have to be honest I would LOVE to see this celebrity go up in flamnes! For a small agricultural town Edenbridge has a lot to offer those who have chosen to make the town their home. You could just take a walk down the High Street and stop in at The Crown or the King and Queen for lunch and then continue your walk to the river. People will greet you; it’s that sort of place. Once you have decided to relocate to Edenbridge you may be surprised at the amount of activities in the town. If you just want some peace and quiet, then take the bus to Hever and wander around the beautiful historic churchyard and see the resting place of Thomas Bullen, Ann Boleyn’s father.
