Buddy The Christmas Elf

So finally, December is here the final month of the year and the most fun because of all the build up to Christmas Day. I am such a big kid and I have always loved the countdown to the big day and now with the boys it is like I can be even more excited because I have them to share it with me.  It is like living my festiveness through them I suppose.

On Friday the local garden centre advertised that their Father Christmas would be arriving by sleigh (pulled by horse and not reindeer sadly!), so of course I decided to take the boys and even managed to drag get Daddy to accompany us. We arrived an hour prior to his arrival time and there was a little merry go round there which the boys enjoyed riding on.IMG_1147 (2)

Of course an hour is a long time for small children to stand around wating to catch a glimpse of Father Christmas, so there was a barrage of “how much longer is there to wait” “when will he be here Mummy?” . Bless them (and all the other excited children waiting too) the main man was almost 10 minutes late which was not helpful! Then suddenly, he was here and he should be renamed Faster Christmas because after all that standing around, he pulled up and got out in about 60 seconds and the most disappointing thing was, he didnt even walk around to meet, greet and wave at all the spectators! Yes he did general waving as he was pulled into the carpark, but Burton was most put out that he did not come over and wave or say hello. He had saved him a chocolate especially!IMG_1153 (2)Still, as I explained to the Burton and Jenson, it was a flying visit just to check that all the boys and girls were being good an then he would be returning to Lapland to make a start on preparing the sleigh and finishing off the presents. Happy enough with this we set off home.

Saturday night once the boys were in bed, I set about making their special delivery from Lapland to present to them Sunday ready for the start of advent. I recall seeing so many Elf on the shelf photos last December on twitter and instagram, that I decided that I would like to start this as a tradition in our home this year.  Instead of buying the official Elf on the Shelf, a very lovely blogger friendoffered to knit one which I thought was a lovely idea and last Friday ours arrived – meet BuddyIMG_1154 (2)So I placed him and two advent calendars in a big box together with a letter from Father Christmas, and addressed the box to both boys. Once sealed I positioned it in our porch making sure it was obvious for Burton and Jenson to see when they came downstairs in the morning.IMG_1155 (2)Sunday morning as we came downstairs I may have exclaimed as we came down the stairs something along the lines of “oh look! What is that at the front door?”, which  made the boys run towards it excitedly saying there was a parcel. Once opened Burton read who it was addressed to and then the pair of them wondered who it was from and asked me to look. I told them that on the back it said that it came from Lapland, so immediately Burton exclaimed that it must be a present from Father Christmas to say sorry that he did not come over and say hello on Friday night!!! That made me smile, he did not forget that!IMG_1156 (2)Well to say they were chuffed to bits with Buddy and the letter (the letter which I must have read about 10 times yesterday and have read another 4 times today although Burton is trying to read it himself . Thing is silly old Father Christmas *ahem* forgot to write it in lower case and did it all in capitals – not good for a boy in recption class!) is a massive under statement. They were – indeed are- thrilled to have an elf (or alf as Burton keeps saying!), “an actual elf Mummy, in our house, I cannot believe it“. They ran straight upstaris and told Daddy all about their parcel and its contents.IMG_1157 (1) IMG_1158 (2)IMG_1159 (2)Burton won’t let go of Buddy and wants to take him EVERYWHERE, the toilet, the bath, the table while we are eating. Last night at bedtime Buddy slept on the beanbag next to big bear and Woody so he could keep an eye on both the boys, and this morning he was not there! I could hear them sounding perplexed as to his whereabouts, switching the light on and looking for him. I was giggling next door in bed, and then in they come, light on asking if I knew where Buddy was to which I told them no. Anyway, he was found sat on the toy quad

Burton: how did he get there Mummy?
Me: It’s magic
Burton: Did you move him?
Me : No
Burton: after a bit of thinking
I know what it is Mummy, When we are awake he is asleep and when we are
            asleep he is awake!

I love it. I love the fact that both boys have embraced Buddy and although Burton is asking a lot of questions, he (and Jenson) believes that he is an elf sent from Father Christmas. He even took Buddy to school today so he could show his class his letter and the elf. He often asks me if we will get to keep Buddy and I just tell him that I dont know but I am sure we will very soon. I am sure there will be lots more mayhem and mischief from Buddy in the meantime, and messages from Father Christmas between now and the 25th.

This just makes me so happy and is pure Christmas magic – I just hope it does not end for a few more years yet.

  1. What a mean Father Christmas he was – but I can understand him being so busy at this time of year. I am loving your Elf. Your boys look like twins in that one picture!

  2. Aw, how sweet! Love the way their imaginations work – they come up with the most creative answers don’t they…? The boys are so cute in these pics and that elf is awesome! Looks much better than the official ones, I think.
