For once last bank holiday weekend was dry and sunny and there was no rain in sight huzzah!
Saturday afternoon the boys and I visited Hartland Abbey for a private event – a summer extravaganza no less – laid on by the company my friend’s daughter works for. It was a family fun day with a Victorian theme (aswell as bouncy castles and face painting which is more 21st century than 19th!), and there was a Punch and Judy show, boat swings and some old fashioned games including a test your strength monitor complete with hammer and a bell! These forms of entertainment certainly brough back come childhood memories for me – ones I had forgotten about really. I recall having a go in boat swings with my brother at some seaside destination when we were children – possibly Weymouth and / or Barry Island and the test your strength -o’meters were always a feature at funfairs during my childhood. I don’t remember if I actually liked Punch and Judy shows as a child, but I do have memories of watching one on Weymouth beach when I was 10 and not thinking
much of it!! However, Burton and Jenson really enjoyed watching the Punch and Judy show on Saturday and were pointing and shouting and laughing through the 30 minute performance. It’s funny because I did know the script, ie. the sausages and the crocodile and the stick that they all hit each other with!
I think Saturday goes to show that despite all the mod cons of today and the high tech games that our children are exposed too, and the sophistciated and so called PC forms of entertainment shown on childrens television, kids today still enjoy forms of entertainment popular with generations before them. Punch and Judy with its stick hitting is no differnt to cartoons like Tom and Jerry really, and again was something I found hilarious as a child. All the children who sat through that Punch and Judy show thoroughly enjoyed it and so did the grown ups!!
Monday was a gorgeous day again and we decided Sunday night that we would go to the beach. After packing a picnic we stopped off en route at Sainsburys to buy a wetsuit for Burton to enable him to go swimming in the sea, and we arrived at Instow beach at about 11am. Straight away we headed down to the sea as the tide was going out. The water was warm and the boys and their daddy went on in, while I stayed near the edge with my jeans rolled up!
Burton did swim in the sea with his Daddy for quite a while as his new wetsuit kept him warm, and I managed to film a few seconds worth – I could not film for longer because my phone memory was too full!!
That’s another thing to tick off the 50 Things List too!

Looks like you had a brilliant weekend, it’s great that it stayed dry so you could enjoy the event. I love the old games & shows – although think I was scared of Punch & Judy when I was younger. Your beach pictures are gorgeous, you would nearly think they’re abroad. Gorgeous memories of a lovely day xx

It looks like a lovely weekend, and I love the traditional games. I don’t know why we ever complain about the UK when we have days like this, when it is like that I would much rather be here than on a beach somewhere else. Your little men are just so incredibly cute. x

I am so glad you had nice weather. I often wonder if all the technology is pushed to stop kids doing things that aren’t deemed as ‘safe’ anymore. I am surprised that Punch and Judy hasn’t been banned for violence lol. And you cannot beat just being at the beach.

The family fun day looked like great fun, we often have Punch and Judy at our Village Fete’s and the children seem to really enjoy it. Great photos from the beach and the boys looked like they had a great time, well done to Burton for swimming and ticking off another from the list. Thanks for linking up and sharing with Country Kids.

Love the traditional games. I wish there were more of these about. Great shots.
