I have been wanting to make these for ages and as I am thinking about including some as part of Burton’s birthday party theme next month, I thought I should have a practice at making them. I have made chocolate ones to start with, but any flavour would work (and could be a recipe post for another time!)
Made 11 cakes
You will need:
for the sponges:
100g caster sugar
100g unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 eggs
100g self raising flour, sifted
25g cocoa powder, sifted
Cornets with a flat bottom
Some pieces of chocolate/chocolate buttons
For the buttercream:
75g unsalted butter
100g icing sugar
25g cocoa powder
2 tbsp milk
To decorate:
Small chocolate flakes, or mini chocolate fingers
Colourful toppings eg. Hundreds & thousands, smarties – whatever you like really
To make the cone-cakes:
Pre-heat the oven to 180oC/160oC fan
Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and beat until pale and creamy
Add the eggs and flour to the butter and sugar and mix well until combined
Add the cocoa powder and mix again
Take your ice cream cones and stand them up in an oven proof roasting tin
Place a small piece of chocolate at the bottom of each cone
Drop 2 tsp of cake batter into each cone
Place the cone cakes into the oven and cook for about 20-25 minutes until cooked and a knife comes out of the sponge clean
Place on a rack to cool down completely
To make the buttercream
Place all of the ingredients into a bowl and beat well (and carefully!) until the buttercream is soft and creamy. If you need a little more milk than what I specified then add some.
Decorate:
Now my decorating skills are not the best, but basically you need to fill a piping bag and you want to make a Mr Whippy ice cream effect on top of each cone with the buttercream.
Once this has been done, simply add your cake decorations to make your own ice cream cone cake designs.
Inside you get a piece of actual chocolate at the bottom of the cone, just like you do with a cornetto ice cream!
They look and taste great, well I think so anyway (and so did Burton)

umm well i would be lying if i said i didn’t enjoy them lol x
Wow. These look fab and I’m sure they’d be a real show stopper at a birthday party. In fact I want you to organise my next birthday party and I want it to be icecream themed! X
Hee hee thanks Lucy. I would love to do themed party planning/ideas once the boys are a school….maybe!! I always have ideas, so feel free to,ask Away 🙂
I Just need to master my cake decorating skills. Xx
These look fantastic. It would be a shame to not include them for Burtons birthday. The decoration is lovely.
I tried making some like these last year, for Harry’s Christening, but messed up somehow (it may be because I don’t allow cakes time to cool and want to rip into them straight away)
xx
Thanks Lauren just have to hope i can make them aswell for Burton’s party x
Wow those look amazing although my lot aren’t fans of chocolate cake, so I may try a vanilla flavour, but they look amazing and would be fantastic for parties!
Thank you. A vanilla buttercream whippy topping with a flake would look just an ice cream! I did chocolate because thats what my lot prefer!! X
ooo they look delicious! x

OMG how wonderfully delicious. Off to pin.
I might have to copy these for H’s party. do you mind? Does the cone go very crispy??
goodness no Emma you go ahead, i got the idea from google having seen lots of lovely photos!! the cones are fine and don’t go crispy at all. they will be great for party food 🙂 xx
thank you ! x
thanks x
I love making the ice cream cone cakes….you should get some of the mini flakes, think I found them in Sainsburys…and get that Wilton 1M tip that I told you about – it’s perfect for doing the big ice cream swirl. Your buttercream always looks so chocolatey! x
Your cone cakes look much better than mine but i thought choc ones were a bit different. Yes i do need a different nozzle next time!! Xx
