When it comes to making cakes, I like to think I am pretty good. I can make great flavour combinations and love to experiment with this ingredient and that ingredient. I used to make the cakes to sell in my cafe and they were popular so I know that I can make cakes. However, when it comes to decorating cakes ………this I am not good at!
So next week is Burton’s 2nd birthday, and I want to make a themed birthday cake for his party. Last year I really wanted to make an Iggle Piggle birthday cake, but in the end I steered clear of even trying and instead opted for lots of different sized cup cakes.
Which I thought looked really good and they went down well with all of the guests.
This year, however, I feel I need to step it up a gear and make a proper birthday cake for his party which is next Sunday (2 days after his birthday) Originally, I was going to go down a Toy Story theme and I was just going to make a large square cake and buy an edible cake topper with a scene from Toy Story on it to sit on the top – simple but effective (and easy and not complicated!). However, as much as he still likes watching these films and playing with his toys, recently Disney Cars is the ‘in’ film with Burton so now I am thinking I ought to make a Lightening McQueen cake.
Now to put more pressure on my efforts, I had a look on the Internet to see what Lightening McQueen cakes had been made by other people. O.M.G!! Some of them are amazing – really – amaaaazing! Seriously, google it and take a look. I have birthday cake making and decorating envy!!
So to make life a little easier I have ordered a car cake tin like this:
not an actual Disney one but I am hoping it can be customised accordingly! A pimp my car cake kind of thing! I have also asked my Mum if she would help me decorate it, as I remember she made my brother and I some brilliant birthday cakes when we were younger. She has agreed but admits it’s been several years since she made any such cakes. Then to make her feel better (not! Lol) I showed her the googled photos!
Anyway, the cake tin has been dispatched so we are having a practice run this weekend. I am also thinking about making a number 2 shaped (the actual number and not the other type of number 2, you filthy minded lot!) cake for his actual birthday when just some members of the family are popping over for tea and cake. Again, Mum is going to show me how this weekend.
I know it doesn’t really matter if the cake doesn’t turn out perfect, so long as it tastes nice is more important to me. However, first impressions count and I know how much I got the mickey taken out of me for a cake I tried to decorate a couple of years ago for my OH’s niece – it has been mentioned lots! it was a disaster I have to admit. But it tasted nice!!
Oh well…….watch this space I guess!
Are you a fabulous cake decorator or do you also have cake decorating envy?
Thank you xx

Aww, I bet it turns out fabulous! Your little one will love it regardless as it’ll be specially made by mummy 🙂 Can’t wait to see!

I too have started to learn to decorate cakes in the past 18 months so yes I suffer hugely with envy. Its time and patience that is needed and most of the time I have neither!

I am exactly the same – baking I can do, decorating (even the simplest kind) is not my strong point! I considered buying some shaped tins for Isla’s first birthday recently but chickened out as I wasn’t sure how they would turn out or how much decorating they would still need. So will be very interested to hear how you get on when you have a little trial of the car cake etc! Good luck!
