Flashback To Meeting Some Large Creepy Crawlies (#FlashbackFriday)

Back in June, Burton and his reception class went on a field trip to the nearby Exmoor Zoo and I was asked to go along as a helper for the day.

I was put in charge of 4 boys, Burton being one of them, and before lunch we were left to our own devices to explore the zoo and find all of the animals. We then met up with the rest of the class for our picnic lunch, after which there was a chance for them all to play in the adventure playground.

It was after lunch that we were invited to pop along to the education zone to have one of the keepers talk to the children and bring out some mini – well actually they were far from mini! – beasts and creepy – and they were indeed creepy – crawlies and reptiles!!!! I have to say that the children were very brave and most of the happily touched the various creatures that were brought out to be talked about and handled.

First off was a massive stick insect, followed by a gaint snail. I learnt that you should never touch the under side of a snail (or slug) because this is their most senstive area. Although big, these two insects did not bother me too much – not that I touched them! However, it was the next two creatures that were brought out which made me feel a little uneasy! A tarrantula and a snake – eeeeeek! I did touch the snake very fast but there was no way I could have had the spider touch my hands, like the children did!!! Yikes! I did feel so sorry for Burton’s teacher, because of course the keeper called her to the front to have the tarrantula lay on her hand first to show her class. I could tell that despite putting on a VERY brave face, she did not really want that to happen. (she admitted to me after that she hates spiders!!)

I was so proud of Burton and his friends for touching these creatures and insects, and show no fear of them. This was just like the times when Barton had overcome the fear of crowds. I guess it just goes to show that children of this age, unless they have been put off them by their parents’ phobias, have a natual curiosity and do not find them scary becaue they do not (yet) have that fear built in them. I wish I felt the same!!!

  1. The teacher was brave… I have so far managed to hide my fear of giant spiders from Mushroom but he knows I won’t pick up a snail! He won’t either, says they’re yucky – maybe that’s my fault? But he’s also scared of house spiders – I’m not! I’m the one who picks them up and places them gently outside… I think he’s seen Mr B panic at the sight of some creepy crawlies though..! How funny that we both posted #flashbackfriday posts about a zoo trip today!

  2. It is lovely that you got to go on the trip. My friend organised a party for us like this and again I was amazed at how brave the children were – and they could see so many frightened adults around. Have to admit that I was one.
