These savoury Sausage Pizza Roll Pinwheels are perfect for taking on picnics, serving at parties or adding to lunch boxes.
I love going on a picnic. I think this is because it is something I did a lot growing up with my family. It was a way of spending some quality time together with my parents and grandparents, and it always involved a walk in the woods or some park beforehand, to help us work up an appetite. My Mum always packed enough food so that we would never be left feeling hungry!
If the weather is dry and it is not too cold, I will find any excuse to pack a bag full of food and go and find somewhere to eat al fresco with my boys. Living in North Devon we really are spoilt for choice when it comes to picnic spots, because we have so many beautiful places to choose from when it comes to enjoying a picnic.
From the beaches to the woods and forests, the moors, the many parks, the cycle path, nearby reservoirs, local National Trust properties and of course even our own back garden will do when we just want to enjoy eating outdoors.
When it comes to having a picnic, here are my top tips for ensuring a perfect one:
- Invest in a good quality picnic hamper or cool bag – there are so many shapes and sizes available but they really do help keep your food and drink packed well and easy to transport.
- If you invest in a good quality hamper the price tag is justified because it will come with its own cutlery, glasses, napkins, corkscrew, mini cooler bag etc which all sit in their own designated places too. Plus after a few uses, you will have saved enough money that you would have spent eating out as a family to pay for the hamper.
- Think about what food to take that you can best pack into your hamper, after all you do not want to be carrying lots of bags when you might have other things to cary, such as chairs, a blanket not to mention a dog and two children and all that they come with on days out! Invest in some litter tubs/zip locked bags to keep your food in and which will save space inside your hamper.
- In hot weather, place your drinks bottles in the freezer the night before your picnic, as these will keep the food cold inside your cool bag. It also ensures that the drinks do not get warm by lunchtime
- If your children like yogurts, buy ones that are sold in tubes or pouches, and again freeze these the night before and they will keep the food inside your children’s lunchboxes cool
- Take a plastic bag with your to collect all of your rubbish to take home, as many picnic spots will not have litter bins
- Invest in a roll up picnic rug, with a waterproof backing, then you can stop and eat anywhere
- Take a bottle of antibacterial hand wash to clean little hands before eating
- Take some wet wipes for cleaning up faces and hands after eating
- If it is a hot day, find a picnic spot in the shade, maybe a big leafy tree or inside some woods
Working up an appetite and being out in the fresh air always makes me feel hungry, and
I like to make the boys go for a big walk/have a run around before we sit down to enjoy our food.
I think anything goes when it comes to picnic food – the important thing is to get out and and about in the fresh air and enjoy eating outside with the ones you love.
My typical picnic fayre consists of:
Filled rolls or sandwiches
Crisps (a sharing tub is easy to take than individual packets)
Fruit (grapes, strawberries and apples usually)
Cocktail sausages
Scotch eggs
Cake
Drinks
Now my two boys are a little fussy with their food, and will not eat sausage rolls because they do not like pastry. So I came up with an alternative for them, Sausage Pizza Roll Pinwheels which are a cross between sausage rolls and pizza.
The boys will actually eat these and they are very easy to make and ideal snack food for picnics, lunch boxes, parties or as a quick supper or lunch at home.
You can of course make the dough from scratch like I did, but you can of course also use a packet of pizza dough mix or even a ready made pizza dough from the pastry section of a supermarket.
However, if you wish to make these Sausage Pizza Roll Pinwheels from scratch then here is the recipe:
- 500g strong stoneground wholemeal flour
- 7g sachet fast-action dried yeast
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 350ml luke warm water
- 4 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp pinch of salt
- 1 x 190g jar of ready made tomato and basil pizza topping
- 500g of good quality sausage meat
- 1 small apple grated
- black pepper for seasoning
- grated mozzarella - a few handfuls
- *TO MAKE THE DOUGH*
- Mix the flour, oregano, yeast and salt together in a large mixing bowl and stir in the olive oil and water.
- Mix well to form a soft dough.
- Turn the dough out on to a floured work surface and knead for about five minutes, or like me use a dough hook in a fire standing mixer, and knead for 5 minutes until the dough is silk, smooth and elastic.
- Transfer to a clean bowl that has been very lightly greased with oil, cover with a damp tea towel (or clingfilm) and leave to rise for about 1½ hours, until doubled in size.
- Once the dough has risen, knock it back, then knead again until smooth.
- Roll the dough into a ball and set aside for another 1 hour until risen again.
- *TO MAKE THE PINWHEELS*
- Pre heat the oven to 180oC / 160oC (fan)
- In a bowl mix the sausage meat with the grated apple and pepper with your hands
- Roll out the pizza dough onto a lightly floured surface to an oblong approx 40 x 25 cm which is not too thin or too thick
- Spread the tomato sauce over the base
- Add the sausage meat and spread it across with your fingers carefully to make it spread across your base as best you can
- Scatter the grated mozzarella over the top
- Carefully, tuck in the smaller sides, and then roll into a long sausage shape ensuring that the fold is at the bottom.
- Slice the 'sausage ' into slices about 1-2 inches wide
- Place onto a large baking tray/s
- Cook for 30 minutes
These are very yummy and well worth the faff of making the dough (but I have been known to use a ready to roll base a few times!).
The boys also enjoyed drinking their fruit juices from posh wine glasses and they made me smile as apparently Burton was drinking prosecco and Jenson rose wine!

These sound great Jenny – perfect picnic fare. I don’t understand how anyone couldn’t like pastry! But my daughter used to pick it all off a sausage roll and just eat the sausage.

Great picnic tips – I totally agree with you that a picnic bag is a really good investment. We have a rucksack one, which is great for taking on long walks (though not nearly as pretty as yours!) – I love how much kit it comes with, including a rug and the whole of the main compartment is like a cool bag, so perfect if it’s going to be sitting in a hot car for a while. Your pinwheels look yum – a great alternative to sausage rolls! And yes totally agree about taking wipes (how did we ever cope without wipes, before children???) Thanks for linking up to #CookBlogShare! Eb x
Jenny Paulin
wipes are such a great invention aren’t they? I think I wrote a blog post about them once lol
