It’s a sad fact that our desserts often get overlooked in comparison to our main courses. And whilst we should all try our hand at creating extravagant creations like Banana Bread Cake with Buttercream every once in a while, it’s also a good idea to have a look out there and see how some of our nation’s best-loved desserts are enjoying a real revival!
What can be more British than a delicious trifle? With layers of custard, whipped cream, sponge cake, jelly, fruits and a splash of sherry, it’s one of our all-time favourites. Whilst I’ll always have a soft spot for other desserts like sticky toffee pudding and even spotted dick, there’s always something about trifle that seems quintessentially British.
What’s interesting is that people in East Yorkshire seem to show a particular hunger for this messy dessert, and seeing as some of the region’s gourmet food establishments like Hull Pie have started revisiting this dish, it seems like we’re in the midst of a retro dessert renaissance.
Although many people might extol the wonders of the likes of Eton Mess, it seems like I should look for something a little closer to home. And what could be more Yorkshire than a good slab of Parkin?
This very traditional gingerbread cake is made with oatmeal and black treacle, and there’s nothing better than heading to the delightful Betty’s in Harrogate and enjoying some classic Yorkshire Parkin with a leisurely cup of tea.
Of course, you don’t necessarily have to travel across the county to places like Hull and Harrogate to sample some of our best loved UK desserts. This is because online delivery resources like Deliveroo are starting to cover a greater area so that we can all hunt down classic desserts like jam roly-poly and arctic rolls from the convenience of our home.
This can be pretty handy as we all know how much effort it takes to create culinary masterpieces of main courses like Montreal-style roast beef, and so it’s nice to have a dessert that can be quickly delivered from afar!
However, there are probably a few desserts that might not be able to travel quite so easily via Deliveroo, and so it seems like for extravagant delicacies like a Knickerbocker Glory, we’ll need to roll up our sleeves and have a go at creating the retro dessert of our dreams!

I love a good dessert and I’d always rather have a dessert than a starter. They’re so much more fun and I’ve got the biggest sweet tooth ever – in fact, you could even mistake them for tusks 😀
