Red Nose Day 2015 is almost upon us, a day to make people laugh and smile and do funny things in order to raise money for a very worthwhile cause. It seems hard to believe that Comic Relief is 30 years old this year – I remember the first one quite well. Nowadays it has become a national institution, and it always amazes me how much money we Brits raise each year.
I have done many fund raisers over the year to support Comic Relief, and for this year, I will be taking part in the Comic Relief Danceathon , where I, along with hundreds of other people, will be dancing non stop for 6 hours!!!! However, before I get my dancing shoes on, I am paying homage to Comic Relief in my favourite kind of way – by getting involved with a special #raisesomedough cake off , and baking a Red Nose Day themed cake (and you know I LOVE to make cake!!). Wearing, of course, my special Red Nose designer apron which is available as part of a range of Red Nose designer homeware available in Home Sense or online
These fabulous aprons have been exclusively designed by fashion designer Henry Holland specifically to #raisesomedough for Comic Relief. They are available in HomeSense along with the rest of the range of aprons and tea towels. You can also grab one online from RedNoseDay.com with at least £6.50 going to Comic Relief.
So back to my #raisesomedough bake……
Having seen the polka dot cakes all over pinterest, I thought this effect would make a great Red Nose Day cake, because the red polka dots inside the sponge would, hopefully, look like red noses. With this in mind, here is my Red Noses Day Cake designed to encourage you to #raisesomedough for Comic Relief this Red Nose Day.
- *Cake Pops*
- 1 packet of Betty Crockers red velvet cake mix
- *Cake*
- 400g unsalted butter
- 400g caster sugar
- 400g self raising flour
- 8 eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- strawberry jam
- 2 tubs of Betty Crocker vanilla buttercream
- red ready to roll icing
- vanilla and chocolate icing pens
- *Cake Pops*
- I made the red velvet cake mix batter and then I used my cake pop tray to make and bake cake pops - I only needed 26 cake pops so I had a few left over which I froze for another time.
- Once made, place to one side and make the cake sponges
- *Cake*
- I made 4 sponges in total and did this in 2 lots as I only have 2 x 8inch round cake tins
- I made the cakes in 2 batches too
- Pre heated the oven to 180oC/ 160oC (fan)
- Greaed and lined my baking tins
- Creamed together the butter and sugar for about 5 minutes until light and creamy
- Add the eggs, vanilla extract and a spoonful of flour and beat well for a few minutes
- Carefully fold in the flour
- Pour the batter into your tins - but leave a small amount left over
- Add 6 cake pops to each tin
- Cover with the remaining batter
- Bake for 20-25 minutes
- Leave to cool then, make your second batch as above
- Once all of the cakes are cooked and cooled, begin assembling them
- I sliced each sponge in 2 to make 8 sponges in total
- I spread each one with jam and then made a tower of them and placed them on a cake stand
- Cover the entire cake in the buttercream
- Place in the fridge for an hour
- Then go over the cake again with a thin layer of the buttercream to give it a smooth finish
- Roll out the red icing, and take your last 2 cake pops and wrap each one in red icing to make red noses
- add eyes and a smiley face with the icing pens, and stick a cocktail stick in the bottom of them, and then stick on to the top of the cake
- Then cut out 8 circles to make more red noses (but flat versions!) and use some warmed up jam to stick around the cake
- Add eyes and smiles
- Your cake is done 🙂
This cake was scrummy and I took it to playgroup the next day and it all went!!!
Baking is fun and it does not matter how good or not so good you are at it, it’s the taking part that counts and if you can #raisesomedough for Comic Relief then please get baking and get fund raising.
Please pick up an apron, a bowl and a spoon online and get baking for this Red Nose Day.
If you would like to sponsor me for the 6 hour danceathon you can do so here thank you 🙂
The Masterclass cake pop tin was sent to me for the purpose of a review and it is so easy to use, makes making cake pops very easy.
